I got a question about Skrooge on how to make transfer from one categories to the other (Please read til the end, I think my usecase is more complicated than it seems)
I use categories the following way:
Each time I get paid I put a certain amount of my pay in a categorie
example: I get 1000€ so I make a "split" operation that I split as follow (example)
+300€ ->food
+400€ ->bills
+300€ ->extra

Along the month I buy some food, so my food categories goes slowly down.
Eventually at the end of the month i end up with -50€ euros in the food categories (Yeah I was Angry this month :p)
Since it doesn't make sense to stay with a negative categorie (it would mean I am my own bank) I got to transfer from one other categories to the food categorie. So basically what I usually do is changing the "pay" operation as follows (example)
+350€ ->food
+400€ ->bills
+250€ ->extra

But In some cases I expense 350€ for food but also 400€ for the bills and also 300€ as extra...
Good for me however, I have some other categorie where I store some money, that I can use in such cases. So I could again change my "pay" operation as follows

+350€ ->food
+400€ ->bills
+300€ ->extra
-50€ ->buy_a_new_car

By doing this, I am just transfering 50€ from the buy_a_new_car categorie to the food categorie. Those 50€ have benn stored there for month now and I can rely on them Thats fine.

Problem: When I open a report and I want to see a report of my expenses for this month:
I go in reports ;
Lines:nothing;
Categorie:columns;
Mode:sum of operation
I untick incomes (so that it doesn't print a difference between the money I 've put into the categorie during the "pay"operation and the sum of all expenses)
I just left expenses ticked ( so, that it effectively print a report of expenses that I have made during the month, categorie by categorie

I will see a
-350€ food -> thats fine, it's what i have spended buying food this month
-400€ bills -> thats fine
-300€ extra -> that's fine
-50€ for buy_a_new_car which would tend to say that I have bought a 50€ car this month--->PROBLEM
Instead of being a real expense, it is just money that I still own but just place in another categorie (which basically I use as "virtual bank account")

I don't know how to handle it ? Creating a "Transfer" operation with two categorie doesn't seems to be possible.

Hi,

If I well understood, you try to manage your budget by using category.
Your procedure is interesting but this is not the best one with Skrooge.

Indeed, Skrooge has a budget module using "envelop" concepts.
With this module you can:
1-Define amounts per category and per month
+300€ ->food
+400€ ->bills
+300€ ->extra

2-Know the current status

+350€ ->food
+400€ ->bills
+250€ ->extra

3-Define rules of transfer for deltas
Example: delta for "food" must be transfer in "buy_a_new_car"

So, I think that this module covers all your needs.
Try it!
