Criticism on Plasma Active

Wed Mar 28, 2012 4:39 am
I wanted to voice some opinion on Plasma-Active.

1.) I think the interface needs a setting area to allow adjustment so that it doesn't look so clunky. Other words the widgets are way too large in borders and interface buttons, etc.

2.) Definitely needs button to un-maximise windows and to kill items in activity profile

3.) Software Keyboard could do with redesign. I guess people could offer alternatives

4.) Plasma Media Center clould be installed as default so that media can be managed very easy

The widgets are large and distant from each other to prevent tapping on the wrong widget.

All windows are maximized when visible, that is a design decision. You can hide all windows by tapping on the "house" icon on the top right corder. Honestly I do not know why there is no close icon on each window, but that was also a design decision (made before I joined the Plasma Active team).

It is already planned: http://community.kde.org/Plasma/Active/ ... n_Keyboard

It is going to be added: http://community.kde.org/Plasma/Active/ ... dia_Center

I created a testing package for it and its maintainer is working on the first release.

You can get more information about Plasma Active at http://plasma-active.org

I don't like how the keyboard doesn't work on all apps. I also don't like how the on screen keyboard doesn't open for root level apps like YaSt or KDM. I am experimenting on how to resolve this.

I also don't like how windows open fullscreen.

Other than this, I like Plasma Active.

PA is mainly aimed at small screen, touch-based devices - 7" tablet as the main representative.

It is not likely that you'll be able to work on anything if you divided that into a few smaller fragments by having non-fullscreen windows. Especially since in that case you'd need to have window title bars which would, again, need to be large so that you can /touch/ them with your fingers.

A few iprovements that could be made of my point of view:
The keyboard should move automatically up/down when it is over the input cursor (no need to do it manually), or the "window" should adapt itself to the keyboard (as in Android). But I prefer the first
There should be arrows on the keyboard (to make selections possible via keyboard, command history in the console...)
(I know that the keyboard is reworked at this time).
There should be a specific Qt style for Plasma active that would make the traditional apps more touch-friendly: larger font (to have larger menu items), larger buttons (bigger gap between the text and the button edges). Larger drop down lists and lists (via larger font)
Maybe could the traditional menu's be automatically turned into a sort of menu button like in Dolphin. That could be created automatically for all KDE app's

My two cents :) Nice work though.
