Hello! I'm new to linux, so please bear with me.
I was looking for a program similar to AcdSee and Gwenview is the most similar one that i've found. I have tons of rar files stuffed with pictures and I want to know if there is some way to view rar files with Gwenview as I can with zip files. Thanks in advance. |

Easy way to tell. Right click on a .rar file and 'Open With' Gwenview (if there are image files there to be read GV should pick them up).
If GV isn't listed in the right click 'Open With' option then click 'Other' and navigate to 'Graphics' >> 'Gwenview' and select it. It will open. And if you put a tick (check mark) in 'Remember application association' it will remember and put GV at the top of the pile when you click on a .rar file in future. If you don't want GV opening a .rar by default then choose what you want (probably an archiver, like Ark or PeaZip) and do the same and that then becomes default at the top of the list, with GV second in the list (but at least you now have GV listed as a right click option). You'll pick it up quick enough, KDE is easy enough to pick up and get around once you've spent a little time in it. |

I tried opening a rar files of .jpg's with Gwenview and got an error message something like it can not open files of type application/x-rar. As best as I can tell for it to be able to work you need to have kio_rar installed but as best as I can determine it was not ported to KDE 4.x.
If you open the archive with Ark you can click an individual pic an the internal viewer will display it, if you open it with File-roller (Gnome) or Thunar (Xfce) you can select the pics desired, right click and open with Gwenview and this will extract the pics to /tmp so they can be viewed Another option is to install a comic reader like Comix (Gtk) or QComicBook (qt), I tested Comix (only package readily available) and it worked fine. |

Thanks for the replies guys!
The thing is that I wanted to be able to browse through rar files from the Gwenview's browser so i can see the thumbnails and all, like you can do with zip archives. I've read something about kio-rar when I've searched for "Gwenview rar files" on google but I couldn't understand a thing ![]() Is it some kind of libraries for rar files? And if so, are there any alternatives for KDE 4? |

there's a bug report/request for the kio, you can add your vote https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=185030

Yeah, the problem is not really related to gwenview here, it's a general thing that support for rar is missing "in KDE" except for applications like ark which are specialized in it. So when this is implemented, it will not be done in gwenview, but in kio and then it will work for all KDE applications (not only gwenview).
I'm working on the KDevelop IDE.
