I have never had problems with using camera:/ as a normal user - I would suggest checking with your distribution in that case, as the device permissions are incorrect. Once you are able to browse the Camera with it however, you should be able to extract the photos without a problem.

An update from KDE 4.4.5 would also possibly help.
