when attempting to cpoy an image to another directory
the file name is always <copyMoveOrLink>.
this behaviour appeared on upgrade to fedora 26 x86-64.
Is there any way to get the image filename xferred with the image?

This has been fixed for KDE Applications 17.08.1 (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=362474) and should be included in Fedora 27 released just this week (see https://apps.fedoraproject.org/packages/gwenview).
