Running Mageia. As I recall, kmail was set up "out of the box," but kontact was not. I transferred my email to kmail. Then I installed kontact and imported my addresses into the personal addressbook. All seemed to go smoothly, but there are two problems.
First, if i open kontact and select mail, it opens a new window with kmail. It doesn't put kmail in the same window with kontact. In my previous installation of KDE, kontact always presents a choice of programs (mail, addressbook, notes, etc) on the left, with the selected program in the right section of the window. Opening in a new window for kmail isn't a show-stopper; it's just a little inconvenient. I would prefer, however, for it to open in the same window. Second, kmail seems unaware of the existence of the addressbook. If I create an email and click on "select recipients from addressbook" none of the addresses in addressbook are listed. If I open the addressbook through kontact, however, my addresses are all there. This is basically non-functional. Finally, a related observation. If I open the configure kontact dialogue, the "tree" of components on the left side of the screen does not include Mail. Can this be fixed? |

That looks like an installation problem, as Kontact loads kmail as a plugin (and from the early KDE days, that's always been the case for me). Can you try enquiring your distro to see if the problem is on their end? Also, can you try the following:
- See if the behavior persists after a "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" - See if the behavior is reproducible under a new user account - Check if there are updated packages for the PIM stack for your distro

Thank you for your response, but I gave up on the Magiea installation. I reverted to Mandriva 2010. I have a problem there, as well, but I submitted a new topic for that.

Thanks! Using this as the user brought kmail back in place for me:
kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental - you made my day! I am using siduction for two days, would have been very annoying to switch because of this misbehaviour. I guess kmail popped out because I was trying to get my mail accounts working from another rig (no chance, though) |
