At some point kmail stops fetching new emails. I see new emails coming in on my email client on my laptop, but kmail shows nothing. I click to check new mail, restart kmail, etc... and nothing. Only a reboot gets kmail working again. But rebooting just for kmail to fetch emails again every once in a while is a pain.

How do I go about figuring out why kmail stops fetching new mail?

Code: Select all
Qt: 4.8.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.8.3 (4.8.3)
KMail: 4.8.3

It is probable that the email agents which are supposed to retrieve your email have decided to go offline.
As a faster fix than rebooting, simply close all KDE PIM applications, then run:
Code: Select all
akonadict stop

Then wait for a short while (30 seconds should be enough, until your disk has calmed down) then run:
Code: Select all
akonadictl start

no luck.

And trying to view the inbox via aknadiconsole states
Code: Select all
Unknown error. (Unable to fetch item from backend)

i had the same problem and found out, that kmail only checks every X minutes.
you can set this option in Preferences of each mail account.

even if i click on a folder, where i definitely already have emails in, kmail doesent recognize it until the next check.

i set the check interval to 1Minute now and this is OK, but not perfect
