Kmail - IMAP going offline by itself

Hi all

I am using KDE 4.8.3 with IMAP mail from a remote mail server (not GMail) which is our work server.

All is working well with this config, except the IMAP account goes offline a lot of the time without me asking it to.
The only way it goes back online is by going into the IMAP config for that account and selecting Serverside Subscriptions. Then it goes back online.
Selecting Restart does not work.

More info:
- I am using two KDE user accounts on this laptop: private & work and switch between them. They need to be kept this way for security reasons.
- i note that when I return to the work one, Kmail gives the message "network connection detected, all network jobs resumed"
- This laptop is using wireless internet access.

So I'd say that there is some sort of time-out in the work account when I am using the private one, sending IMAP offline and its not kickstarted when i return to the work one??
I am assuming that the Linux IMAP server is behaving itself.

Any hints or ideas please?

Best wishes

Andy

It should be fine with this kind of setup. I'll ask for reasons why the IMAP connection may go offline from the developers.

Thanks very much.

if you can ask them also at the same time:
On my other account i get "Local Folders: Maildir '' for collection '' is invalid." errors when checking my email for new messages.
One for each POP account checked. Yet my config looks ok.
I also get some strange errors too, possibly relating to this error msg.

Cheers

It likely means that your local folders do not point to a valid path on your disk. Can you check that from the KMail accounts preferences?

Thanks einar

The local folders path is fine.
It even tells me in the dialog that it contains valid Maildir directories.
its been like this since I installed it as a clean install!

Cheers

Andy

PS My IMAP mail is having a field day going offline this morning. Not quite sure why, but its a real annoyance.

The Maildir message from the POP accounts is a known issue unfortunately, and is one experienced by the developers. For now, please ignore it.

IMAP accounts going offline is also an issue which affects developers from time to time as well. No solution is available at this time to it, other than to trigger a reconnection i'm afraid.

I have this problem but not every day
I have an imap account and sometimes it asks me to go online but it does nt go (internet working fine)
Restart kmail does nt fix the problem but if i restart the computer it works again

As it is an akonadi imap resource, and as akonadi has many issues, i think that the problem comes from there. I remember (not very sure) that before going offline, it is very slow while fetching messages from the imap server.

Hi Dimitrios

I have noticed that when I go into the account settings for the IMAP account then it goes back online again.
its the short-cut solution at the moment.

Also i had the same problem as you yesterday with the IMAP not staying online at all.
When I looked at the System Monitor it showed a number of instances of Akonadi related processes running (possibly too many?). Again, like you, the only resolution I found was to reboot (i could have killed all the Akonadi related processes but it might have had unintentional effects?).

My suggestion would be for one of the Kmail developers to run a local or remote IMAP server and see how it goes, in order to find, prioritise & fix bugs?

Hi bcooksley

Apologies for the late thank you.
Thanks for your feedback.

I'll soldier on for the time being.

If you have concerns about Akonadi processes, running "akonadictl stop" will cause it to shutdown. In general, as long as the names of the processes aren't repeated, this should be fine however.
