kmail losing mail again

Wed Jul 11, 2012 1:43 am
After working quite well for some time, kmail has started losing mail again

What I mean is that mail does not appear in the proper kmail folder (neither local
nor imap - the last is just plain terrifying).

But if I look inside ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_file_data I can find the missing
messages

kmail has done this to me before and I never found a solution

It *seemed* to have been fixed by 4.8.3 but now it's started again.

I really don't like that mail is being removed from my imap server inbox and disappearing
into db_file_data

I don't expect a solution but if anyone knows how to force messages from db_file_data
back into kmail it would be great.

Hi,

I've had the same problem and asked for help in this forum and on the kdepim-users mailing list. No answers that helped me.

So what did I do?
I switched to ThunderBird, installed an ImportExportTools addon and imported all mails (even those in ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_file_data). Then I used the "Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate)" addon and deleted the duplicated mails. After that I had manually move the mails imported from db_file_data to the correct folders.

Maybe this helps.

Best regards,
Andreas

Are you using filters by any chance?

I have a couple of filters but they did not match the missing email messages ...

one of the missing messages was a very large (big attachments of about 6 MB in total) sent
message that did get sent but did not get also copied to the imap Sent Messages folder
(which I have it set to do).

I feel your pain - I used thunderbird for while but I actually like kmail better (when it works) and now I hear that thunderbird
will be discontinued ...

I thought it didn't matter much if kmail screwed up locally because the messages were safe on the remote imap server,
but now some remote messages have been removed and disappeared (albeit into db_file_data).

I've heard some say that this cannot happen with kmail

Believe me, it can happen and it makes me scream with fear and frustration :)

A number of mail loss bugs have been fixed / mitigated for 4.9. so you may want to try RC2 or the final version once it's out.

It has not really been "discontinued". It's just that Mozilla decided they will not introduce new features into it. They will still fix stability and security issues found. New versions will be available, just changelog will be much less exciting.

Moreover, they promised to provide infrastructure suitable for independent developers. Thunderbird is open source app, so it is possible that some hardcore fans of it will decide to send patches that introduces new features.
