I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04 (AMD64); And I'm jumping full force into KDE4.8.(most current in the Ubuntu repository I believe) In the past I've had most of the reoccurring, major bugs, so before I set up any of my accounts I wanted to see if there was CURRENT documentation or how to on the most effective least crashy way to do it.
I saw where akonadi was back and the how to post from earlier this year. I know I recently also came across a posting/how to in Ubuntu documentation(?) on how to work around akonadi setting up Contacts & Calendar from Google. I haven't managed to re-locate that 2nd one, I will be doing that shortly. Basically in the past I've always done it kind of hit and miss. One of my 3 email accounts, ignoring all the "extras" (contacts, folders, etc); Then calendar into Korganizer (I've used webdav, open exchange, akonadi google); then back to set up more emails and eventually contacts. I end up with a mess of files and craziness and it is prone to crashing. Oh and on some account I did an IMAP (default for the account) AND a POP3 so that all emails would download for local backups. Now I prefer IMAP so I can see my mail on any of my devices, but getting it to download completely has been such a pain that I used this really bad work-around. Any question as to why my installs have been bad? So I'm looking for advice first. Links to good, current documentation or just the basic words of wisdom from the forum experts appreciated! |

The best approach is to use "libkgapi" (also called "libkgoogle" before it was changed to avoid explicltly mentioning trademarks) and the "akonadi-google" setup. I use them daily with little issues (notice that package names may vary slightly depending on the distro). Also, these are going to be shipped directly in KDEPIM for 4.9 and onward.
Another alternative, should you not have those available, is to use CalDAV ( http://www.dennogumi.org/.../access-mul ... korganizer).

Thank you! The repository offers 3 versions of libkgapi--the main one, the dev, and the dbg. I know dbg is never a bad thing to have installed just in case. In this case would the dev be a good idea? What with KDE developing at a different rate than Ubuntu and bug fixes etc?
I'll start setting up today and I will post back any problems/questions. But for now I'll mark this as solved. I'm thinking I'll set up the online accounts in system settings and then set up Kontact. In this case I'll probably start with calendar then contacts and then email. |
