Hi,

Until now kmail worked fine under Kubuntu 12.04. It is version 4.8.4. But now sending mails doesn work. Apparently sending a first mail after startup works. But a second mail failed. The mail composition window greys out and nothing happens. Closing the message window it asks to optionally save it as a concept (apparently the state is ¨not send¨.

The process kmail still runs after closing kmail. Restarting afrer killing the process didn`t help.

On a occasion I saw the process ¨nepomukservicestub¨ running at 50% cpu (dual core) and it kept running after closing the message window, also after closing and killing kmail.

Killing the nepomukservicestub process and restarting kmail, then again sending mail works, the mail can be send. How long it works looks random. I had the error after sending 1 mail, but at another trial I send 20 mails consecutively without problems.

Has anyone had the same problem?

The only Nepomuk-related Kmail with I can think of is:
System Settings → Desktop search → Enable Email Indexer.
You can try disabling it and see if problem still persists.
(I mean: there is certainly something wrong, this thing should never happen. But disabling Email Indexer may be suitable as temporary workaround.)

An issue relating to the slow response of Nepomuk when sending emails was recently patched in KDE Trunk, which may be related to that.

Since I disabled email indexing the problem did not occur anymore.
Thanks

You are not alone in having this problem, and for me also disabling nepomuk solved the problem. It's a pity, because one of the main positives about the upgrade to Kmail2 was faster searching.

Kubuntu 12.04 4.8.5.

As I am reading a Forum there are still so many problems with "new" KMail. I have KDE 4.8 on FreeBSD and I use the old kdepim and KMail works. This weekend I;m planning to update KDE to 4.9.3.
Is it still better to keep the old kdepim, please?

Kmail is ok since version 4.9.3 (Kubuntu 12.10). Kmail and akonadi do not use that tremendous amount of memory (+/-100 Meg). It works as it should for a mail agent (gmail + 2 other imap). Search works marvellous (a speedy response like mail on OsX), that's an advantage. The only thing which I could not get working again was an automatic filtering of a discussion group to a special mail folder. It does not update.

Korgac (within Kontact) however uses 300 Meg and the akonadi_googlecalender adds another 300 Meg. And the calendar does not give a smooth user experience. I really do not understand why it needs such amount of resources. Compare this to an android phone: it can do the same (calendar + contacts) is < 50Meg. And contact seameless integrate exchange, google, local, linkedin contact information.

In brief: kmail ok, don't use calendar and kontact in general.
