I have just upgraded to kde4.8.3 on a Linux platform, which has replaced kmail by kmail2. In kmail I was able to filter incoming messages by size (which is provided for in kmail2) and hold over-size messages on the POP-3 mailserver so that I could select which should be downloaded, which held on the server and which rejected. By setting the size very small, this gave me a means of keeping suspect e-mails at arms length. At first glance there doesn't seem to be any entry in the Filter Action drop-down which would enable me to achieve this in kmail2. Has this facility been dropped, or have I simply not been able to find it?

I'm not sure if it's the same option as in kmail1 (long time since I used it), but in Settings -> Configure Filters you can set criteria "Size in Bytes".

Yes, Progdan, I found that, but what Filter Action choice would do what I want? I don't see one on the list.

I'm returning to this thread after a long gap because the apparent lack of a message size filter has resulted in the automatic opening of a scam e-mail, ostensibly from a well-known courier which I do use, which is reputed to carry a virus. I think I (or rather my computer) got away unscathed, but if I had had message size filtering (as available in earlier releases of KMail with options to allow, delete or postpone delivery of the message) I would have been able to check it out from the subject line and kill the message at the server, without opening it locally. For me, this is now more than an academic point, and I would be glad to know either (a) if there is an effective means of message size filtering, how to activate it, or (b) if there are plans to re-instate the message size filtering capability.

What was the name of the missing action in KMail?

Einar, you are stress-testing my memory. I set up the old KMail filter so long ago that I cannot remember the name of the action. However, I shall dig out an old live linux DVD (PCLinuxOS) which may have KMail on it, and as soon as I have found it and checked it out I will reply further.
Thanks, Peter N |

Sorry for the trouble. I need to know that just to see whether it is present in my 4.10 install.

Einar,
My memory was obviously faulty (the wetware RAM is clearly getting a bit old), because having done some more digging via Google, I've come up with the following, dated 2003, from http://www.unixresources.net/linux/lf/47/archive/00/00/02/20/22065.html
That's obviously how I set up my old KMail client. However, I still can't find anything in the KMail Settings in the new KMail installation which corresponds to this facility, so I'm still in need of advice. Thanks, Peter N |

I assume this is for POP? As I use IMAP I wasn't able to see it. You may want to file a bug on bugs.kde.org as this is possibly a regression from the Akonadi port.

Einar,
You surmise correctly; I use POP for e-mail handling. Following your suggestion I will post under bugs.kde.org and see what happens. Thanks again, Peter N |

The size filter in KMail was extremely useful. What a pity the new Kmail loss that service
