I lost my attachments when moving mail folders to kmail2

My first try at migrating to kmail2 was a disaster so I started over and created all my accounts and identities from scratch. Then I copied the folders from ~/.kde/share/app/kmail/mail to ~/.local/share/local-mail. (For the system folders like inbox and sent-mail, I had to copy the contents in the folders not just the folders, but for all personally created folders I just copied the folders over.)

That worked well except that all my emails no longer have their attachments.

There seemed to be no difference in the .ids and .index files so I left them. I'm wondering if this has something to do with my problem.

How do I get my attachments back?

Were the original folders in Maildir format? "Losing" attachments in that case seems a bit odd, as they should be base64-encoded in the message file. Try first the following: navigate to a message you know it has an attachment, then choose View -> View message structure from the menu. This should open a small window under the message view pane showing the various bits making up the message. See if the attachment is listed there.

Thanks, the attachments are there. Turns out what's missing is the attachment icon in the message list. New messages received by kmail2 are showing the icon, messages I copied over from kmail1 are not. Any idea how to get the attachment icon to show for those messages. I tried "Update Folder" to no avail.

I had the same issue in the past, but it's very inconsistent and I don't know how to reproduce it all the time.
