hi!
I am using bluetooth to connect my phone to KDE. But this is pretty much useless if I don't get the contacts into kaddressbook and I want to send SMS text messages also via KDE. I know Wammu can do it but that doesn't integrate well in KDE. So what is the Wammu alternative for QT/KDE or is there another way? thx for reading, piedro |

I don't think the bluetooth stack and / or KDE PIM support that option yet, unfortunately. But I admit I'm not very knowledgeable on that matter.

The only development I hear about is Kitchensync http://www.opensync.org/wiki/kitchensync but have no idea where that stands now. Look on kde-apps.org you find KDroid, could become useful but seems to be "not moving" for quite some time |

quote from kde-apps.org re Kitchensync:
"I am sorry to tell you that I had to give up developing kitchensync. I took it over from Tobias Koenig to make it work again with the new opensync API, but now that I have started my professionnal life I don't find any time to maintain kitchensync anymore. I hope there will be someone willing to pick up this nice project. The code is really well written and easy to understand." Does not sound promising... |

Failing that, I use Google's "people" as I have an <ugh> Iphone (from work no choice), an Android tablet and my desktop running Kubuntu 12.04.1. It's a pain if not impossible to get everything to gel and work right (or at least in the fashion I want it to), but's it's serviceable.

All this news is very unfortunate. Imho the general point here is that we have to realize that modern desktop computing hardly ever exist in a technical monoculture environment. Microsoft has to realize that their approach of only supporting "their" stuff doesn't work anymore and they have to change (which they do, btw, well, not really ...). The same holds true for Apple systems. For linux desktop environments, at least if we want to work on a productive day to day basis, there is still a lot of work to do. Sadly the nature of opensource development is abit of an obstacle here. The people working, well doing their professional job with say KDE or Gnome desktops, can't contribute too much because of time restraints. The people not really working productivly don't see the same necessities.
What I am saying is: If you can't connect and integrate "alien" technology into your desktop you cannot really do modern computer work. Yes I need to sync and backup my data on my mobile device. Yes I want to share my music collection with my family and all their devices. I want to work on web development projects and collaborate with my collegues on their proprietary systems. And yes, I want to choose a PIM-system of my liking and expect a possibility to integrate it into my desktop funcionality (so if the desktop is now akonadi based I want a possibilty to use thunderbird, evolution or even webbased stuff like evernote or mendeley). Is this reasonable to expect from KDE (or Gnome)? Probably not. And since we don't have to pay for all the excellent software in KDE as is, noone can or will demand anything. But my point is that the reality of how people work with their desktops has changed in a major way. Their expectations also. I get frustrated by the fact I can't access my phone in a useful way just because I chose to use KDE. I am not expecting the KDE team to fix it for me. But the KDE team has to think about how to connect their environment to the technolocigal mutliculture that's surrounding them. That has always been the strong point of linux (look at filesystem access for example!) but I feel that now KDE, Gnome, Unity are building nice and immensly functional desktops but focus in the wrong direction ... Coffee time is over, I spent my two cents, have a nice day, piedro |
