KMail2 unable to delete IMAP messages

I use KMail2 to read e-mail on an external IMAP server. When I ask KMail2 to move a message to trash, it complains that moving the message failed and the message remains in INBOX. How can I diagnose the problem?
Things went back to normal when I stopped Akonadi. |

Stopped in the sense of restarted? Are there any messages in .xsession-errors that may lead to the cause of the problem?
