I'm fairly new to Kmail and have tried to set notifications by:-
1) under Settings/Configure Notifications 2) under Kmail (not Kmail email client) selecting 'new mail arrived' and checking 'show a message in a pop-up' and 'Mark task bar' But..... nothing happens I really like this KDE/Plasma thing but should need to keep on maually checking for new emails. Any help would be much appreciated KMail Version 4.8.5 Using KDE Development Platform 4.8.5 (4.8.5) |

When you have to check emails manually, do you mean opening the kmail window to check for new emails, or having to press the "check mail" button in kmail?

Sorry - should have been more explicit.
I mean opening the kmail window to check for new emails. |

I see these on 4.9 and beyond, so I assume this is a bug still present in 4.8.x.

Hi @ll!
It happens to me as well. So, it's not possible that akonadi or kontact send a notification that a new email has arrived? Is it necessary to have a Kmail instance opened in order to receive new email notifications? In this case, is it possible to close Kmail to the tray bar? (Every time I click on the close button it does close Kmail even with tray icon enabled) |

Ok. I just found out that it closes to tray if the option is enabled to always show in system tray. :-P Anyways, shouldn't Kontact or Akonadi notify about new emails? |

I'm getting notifications, but they are often inconsistent (sometimes shown, sometimes not).

Do you get notifications with Kmail closed? |

Closed as in not running, or minimized to tray? In the former case, no, in the latter case yes.

Yes, that's what I meant. I can confirm that mail notifications are displayed when Kmail is minimized to tray. Otherwise, mail notifications aren't displayed at all. Anyways, I think they should appear as long as akonadi server is running. |

Until the setting of mail fetching while KMail is closed works 100 I say no thanks. I do not want mail fetching or notifications when I have not started KMail - at the moment the setting exist but seems to not always be respected |

IMO the display of the notifications should be handled by the applications handling them, i.e. KMail or whoever is using the PIM stack at the high level. They should not be part of the lower bits of the stack such as the Akonadi agents and what not: those should just provide the elements necessary for applications to plug into.
