constant Kmail failures

Tue Dec 25, 2012 11:38 pm
I'm a long-time ubuntu user (currently 12.10) but a new user of Kmail 4.9.3 and have nothing but trouble keeping his app running. I have dual POP accounts because I dual mail services (Roadrunner and Gmail). If one POP server doesn't fail then the other does, and changes it's name from what I gave it to POP Server 3 and can't be restarted. Have to delete the account and recreate, at which time the other fails And the Mail Dispatch Agent also goes offline regularly and won't restart. This CANNOT be right. It could be Pilot Error, but how hard is it supposed to be configure a mail client?

Happy to supply any info needed.

What exactly does "fail"? What are the error messages displayed?

Hello Einar -

Thanks for your reply -

In my configuration there are two mail providers, Gmail and TimeWarner (Roadrunner). In Kmail both are configured as POP3 and SMTP. There two POP3 accounts and two SMTP entries. These are the symptoms: One or both POP3 servers (I believe that's how the Akonadi Console identifies them) stop workikng. In that console there are no green light indicators for those services and the Restart selection doesn't appear to work. As I say (not trying to be redundant), first one, then the other, then both go dark. I do get on-screen messages telling me they're off-line, inviting me to turn them on and I select yes, but no change in status occurs.

I also have trouble with the SMTP periodically, and when that fails there is an error message (I will post that when I get back to that computer) and the Console shows that as off-line, too.

I have not started Kmail from the console but I can easily do that and see if I can parse out errors there. I'm willing and able to troubleshoot but am not sure where to start.

Thanks

Hello group -

here are some examples of the errors I get when I start Kmail from the console:

QVariantMap DBusMenuExporterDBus::getProperties(int, const QStringList&) const: Condition failed: action

and

void Viewer::slotChangeDisplayMail(Viewer::ForceDisplayTo mode,bool loadExternal) false

both numerous times with a few minutes of starting the application.

Thx

By "stop working" do you mean that no new mail is being fetched?

Are you able to create a fresh configuration on a new user account and see whether the issue disappears or not?

yes, by "stop working" I mean kmail doesn't fetch any messages.

I haven't created a fresh configuration on a new user account, but have deleted the POP accounts and rebuilt those. Here's the odd thing about that... As I say, I have two POP servers, and If deleted the non-functioning one and rebuilt it, then it was then working but then the other failed to work, so I deleted that one and rebuilt it, but it crashed the first (so it was unable to fetch mail. Then the outbound crashed to but seem to come back after I rebooted.

thoughts welcome

That is why you should (if possible) try to replicate the issue on another user account. This may be with some transient failure on your configuration, or may be a bug in itself, but at this moment I'm not sure. (I don't use POP, but I don't have the SMTP issues you describe).
