Kaddressbook question/request

Sat Jan 05, 2013 7:32 am
I am hoping that others with specific knowledge (especially annew!) will reply:

Is there any plan (even if long range) to consolidate contact data accross a users various addressbooks?
--Ex: I have gmail contacts, my contacts, & facebook contacts.
I would prefer to look up the contact by name and see an
output of all contact data accross the address books given.
** I can see where this might be difficult considering that not
all addressbooks use the same "field naming structure."
Is this a request that many other users have requested? If yes, what is the barrier for emplimentation?

As always, thanks for the hard work and a quality product!

........ I'll take that as a "no." :z

Hmm. I thought more people would desire this sort of integration.

There's something more high level called the KPeople library, but that's a different scope from what you ask, I think.

Yes, I figured it might have to be a program that might be "layered" on top of akonadi & kaddressbook. Almost like a plug-in that would sort & combine various "like" contact information. Maybe even one that would allow you to combine it semi-manually would be sufficient. In a way though, akonadi already does this functionality.... if you have two exact contacts it will ask you which one you want to keep. Or at least I think it does something like this...

I know that kaddressbook is a work in progress, I just haven't seen on any "-to-do" list that this functionality is planned.

In a business world this kind of functionality is crucial. After all, it's the information that you want to see.... not the various address books. Most people who aren't geeks like us don't care what address book its in -as long as they can get the data they need and interact with that contact in exactly the way they desire. It just seems strange to me that the developers of kaddressbook would take the project as far as they have -and done a really nice job with it... and then just leave it with semi-polished functionality. That's why I was hoping for a reply. I'm wondering if they'd like to see this type of functionality -or if in their view they are satisfied with the project and want someone else to pick up the project and help take it further? I don't know that I am that person, but surely we are out here and willing....

Since there have been no replies (yet) I have to wonder if perhaps KDE is not really being used for business or by business users much at all?

On the contrary, Kontact and co. are pretty much used (in their "enterprise" branches) in business. But it looks like kpeople may do what you want, once it's done.

Hoping someone with a bit of development knowledge can help me. I have downloaded kdepim & kaddressbook from the git repository. I got to thinking about it and I just want to play around a bit with the gui. I don't *really* want to get into anything extensive. Thought for what I'm wanting to see I might just be able to modify the gui interface. I've looked all thru the kaddressbook files using kdevelop. i can't seem to find the .ui file or any other "main screen" gui for the addressbook. From what I can see there just doesn't seem to be a recognizable gui in the kaddressbook folder. I know that it is considered a kpart... and i found some of the configuration pop-up widow gui's.

Obviously I am no developer. I just want to toy around with it. Can someone point me in the right direction? In looking at other kdepim applications most of them have a main screen .ui file of some kind. kaddressbook doesn't seem to follow this convention...?

A lot of the UIs in KDEPIM are sadly still made up in code. Perhaps it would be worth poking the KDEPIM developers to mark those who can be converted to ui files as junior jobs.
