A couple of days ago Kmail in Kontact stopped checking emails on check, let alone retrieve them. I've one POP account and 4 imap (gmail) accounts. I know they have email becuase I've sent email to them.

In the first instance a restart and re-entry of the Kwallet password seem to do the trick the first time it occurred but now it seems permanent.

The only error message I can find is.

There was no change in KMAIL's behaviour.

after a restart it all worked again, however, before the "akonadictl restart" command was attempted it had failed after a half dozen restarts. I expect it will happen again.

Do you have any suspicious errors in ~/.xsession-errors?
