I've been posting on the Kubuntu forum about errors I'm seeing in my xsession-errors file and strange behavior of kmail. Hopefully this is the right forum to post this stuff to.
The kmail app often takes 2-3 tries before it will come up. When it does come up for the first while it takes up to 30sec to flip folders. After a while it becomes "usable" but never snappy. This sent me to look in my .xsession-errors file for clues and I found lots of unexplained errors and warnings in there. Here is a sampling: ==== QDBusConnection: session D-Bus connection created before QCoreApplication. Application may misbehave. QDBusObjectPath: invalid path "" X Error: BadAtom (invalid Atom parameter) 5 Major opcode: 18 (X_ChangeProperty) Resource id: 0x0 kwin(1823): ""fsrestore1" - conversion of "0,0,0,0" to QRect failed" plasma-desktop(1833)/libplasma Plasma::isPluginVersionCompatible: unversioned plugin detected, may result in instability X Error: BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter) 4 Major opcode: 54 (X_FreePixmap) Resource id: 0x22000c2 akonaditray(1872)/libakonadi Akonadi::AgentManagerPrivate::createDBusInterface: AgentManager failed to get a valid AgentManager DBus interface. QDir::mkpath: Empty or null file name(s) ==== Many of these are repeated multiple times in the file. The BadPixmap error seems to be in part related to simply changing windows/desktops. Since I upgraded to Kubuntu 13.04 (still beta) it seems that kwallet wants to startup unsolicited. In the past it only came up when I tried to launch kmail. If this isn't the correct forum for such a posting perhaps someone could suggest a more appropriate one. Thanks in advance for your help. bob |

This looks like a configuration error in Akonadi. Can you bring up "akonadiconsole" then pick "Restart Server" from the Server menu (don't touch anything else for now)? By doing this via GUI, a self-check is initiated during startup, so it should tell you about possible problems. Paste the results here, if the self check windows shows up (it doesn't if everything is OK).

My Kubuntu didn't come with akonadiconsole installed. I used the Muon package manager to install it. I restarted the machine and then at a console terminal window I ran:

Just curious. This thread now shows as moved. However it is not obvious how to tell where it has been moved to.

It looks there are timeouts, but I'm not sure what is causing it. Are you using a standard Kubuntu installation? Also, do you have the semantic desktop framework enabled or disabled (check in System Settings > Desktop Search)?

I started with a standard Kubuntu 12.04 and through the process of trying different things to solve my problem I have upgraded first to 12.10 and finally to Kubuntu 13.04.
I have the indexing on emails turned off, but still enabled for desktop files. Along the way it was suggested that I turn this off, but at that version level it didn't affect my kmail behavior or the errors in .xsession-errors. At next opportunity I'll try turning it off again. Thanks in advance for your help. bob |

There's one last thing to try: create a fresh user account and try setting kmail up there. See if the problem persists.

I went back and retried a previous suggestion: to turn off the semantic desktop. Now kmail comes up on first go. The folder change works ... not particularly snappy ... but usable. The kwallet prompt for email passwords still comes up ahead of the kmail window, however.
My .xsession-errors file now contains more multiples of different error/warning sequences including: === QDir::mkpath: Empty or null file name(s) QStringList Akonadi::NepomukSearch::search(const QString&) Calling blockingQuery() failed! === Most of the previous errors appear to still be present in the file include those associated with akonadi. My KDE is almost "usable" again, but this execise has left me disappointed that the "simpler is better" philosophy has vanished from the KDE world. Having said that I'm willing to experiment some more to see if those errors can be reduced or eliminated with my setup. At this point I'm just at a loss as to what I can try. Thanks in advance for your help. bob |

Please try with a new user account, as I suggested. This will rule out obscure configuration errors. Notice: you do not need to remove your existing account, just create another one in parallel and test there.

OK. I created another KDE user account. I restarted my machine and logged into this new user account and looked at the .xsession-errors file. Nothing jumps out as being significantly different. Still lots of similar error/warnings in there. Also lots I've not seen before. Nothing about Akonadi that I could see.

Most of the warnings are harmless, some are easy to fix (and were fixed) others are a little more hard to handle. In any case, it shouldn't affect your user experience.
