Current state of kmail/kontact

Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:05 pm
Hi all, after a year or so of using thunderbird I now tested kmail/kontact again to see what its current status is. I set up my accounts, played around a little bit and found a couple of things that did not work as expected (most things did work, though, I see a clear improvement over the situation a year ago), and which I would like to ask about here. To each point my question is: Is this a known bug? Do you experience the same behaviour, or is there a way around/a configuration to make it work?

I use KDE 4.10.2 on Kubuntu 13.04.

1) google contacts: is set up in akonadi and has the green "all ok" icon, I can also see it in the addressbook component of kontact. But the contacts are not used for autocompletion when writing email. I can also not find my contacts via krunner, btw.

2) folder synchronization: apparantly kmail synchronizes all folders on the IMAP servers I am using (maybe I told him so somewhere ..). These are many, and the process is therefore rather slow. Is there a way to tell kmail to check for incoming mail only in specific folders and sync the others only when I look into them or when I copy/move a mail to such a folder?

3) the search function seems not to be working at all

4) what about inline display of images in emails? I tried drag and drop an image file from dolphin, which attaches it (a nice advantage over thunderbird), but can I set it to display the picture inline?

5) in the calendar, for some reason I cannot activate the week view. month view works fine.

6) does anybody know if there is a plugin for synchronizing akregator with feedly?

I would really like to see a PIM suite that's nicely integrated in KDE, as kontact is. Any input on the above items highly appreciated

This is a known bug in 4.10.2, autocompletion of mail addresses stopped working. A fix is said to come with 4.10.3

I almost only use POP so hopefully someonelse can help

check that the akonadi-nepomukfeeder is running, I have to start it manually every time I boot. Install akonadiconsole for this purpose if you have not already done so. Known bug. Search does work but seems to have problems

Hope that sorted out a few things for you. Am on 12.10 with kde 4.10.2 myself

Thanks, that's good to know.

Thanks for the hint. I installed akonadiconsole, and saw that the nepomukfeeder claimed nepomuk wasn't running (but it was). Restarting the akonadi nepomuk feeder worked, but after one second it claimed indexing would have been completed. Doubtful, given the number of emails it should index.. and sadly, search is still not working. Seems the akonadi-nepomuk interaction is not quite finished yet.

I have noticed the same behaviour since 4.10.2 (the nonindexing indexing of mail). Possibly this might help you as a workaround though it does not seem to work for everyone:
There is way to make KMail look in all Nepmuk data instead of where it
is so to speak supposed to (explanation way to techie for me, maybe
Lindsay can explain it).

In folder HOME/.kde/share/config there is a file
"kpimcompletionorder". Add these 2 lines:
[General]
UseNepomuk=true

restart KMail and hopefully completion works (you get more suggestions
than before)

Whatever you do - do not set the value to "false", even Dolphin
stopped working for unknown reasons

As I said: this is a workaround, it is NOT how it is supposed to work.
