kmailcvt and message files

Sat Apr 27, 2013 7:20 pm
Hello.

I've tried to update my Debian sid/experimental from KMail to KMail2 with no success. The migration program didn't work (it got stuck in an old pop account whose login doesn't work), and I tried to do it manually. It worked more or less, but KMail2 was awfully slow, so I removed all the config and migrated my email to Thunderbird using the instructions found in http://www.ulduzsoft.com/2012/01/from-kmail-to-thunderbird/ until I solve my KMail2 problems. After having verified that my emails were safe in Thunderbird, I erased the ~/Mail folder where my mail was stored by KMail (it was around 10 GB).

I've tried to start from scratch the KMail2/Akonadi configuration by doing the following:
  1. Erase the KMail/Akonadi/Nepomuk configuration with the following commands (warning! don't try these in your system or you can loose important information):
    Code: Select all
    cd ~
    akonadictl stop
    find .kde .local .config -name '*kmail*' -exec rm -rf \{\} \;
    find .kde .local .config -name '*akonadi*' -exec rm -rf \{\} \;
    find .kde .local .config -name '*nepomuk*' -exec rm -rf \{\} \;
    rm -rf ~/.local/share/local-mail/
  2. Import mail from Thunderbird by means of kmailcvt.
Kmailcvt works without errors, and it leaves my email in maildir format in ~/.local/share/local-mail/. Or it should.

It seems that the number of files under that folder continues to increase after kmailcvt has finished. I've verified this by doing this just after kmailcvt has finished and several hours later:
Code: Select all
find ~/.local/share/local-mail | wc -l

The number increased from the initial 10610 to more than 100000 two hours later. Eight hours later, I couldn't find all my email in that folder (I missed one of the folders that have most of my emails and, although it appeared in KMail, I couldn't access its contents).

Now, the questions are:
  • How can I be sure that all my email has been migrated?
  • Where is my email stored before ending in ~/.local/share/local-mail/?
  • What happens if I shut down my computer before?
I hope that someone can help me with this. I want to use KMail again as soon as possible (Thunderbird is really fast, but I don't like its interface at all).

Thanks.

First of all, a question: what version of KDE PIM are you using?

How can I be sure that all my email has been migrated?

After kmailcvt has run, all mail should have been moved.

Where is my email stored before ending in ~/.local/share/local-mail/?

It is only stored in the original location you migrated it from.

What happens if I shut down my computer before?

Before what exactly? Before the migration is complete?

I asked for the KDE PIM version beacause a new kmail1 importer was made (IIRC) for the upcoming 4.11 (this summer).

Thanks for your answer, einar.

4.10.2.

How can I be sure that all my email has been migrated?

After kmailcvt has run, all mail should have been moved.

That's what I thought, but it doesn't. As I said, it takes much more time after kmailcvt has finished to put the email in the ~/.local/share/local-mail folder (and worse, not all my email, and I don't know how much time it should take to appear there).

Where is my email stored before ending in ~/.local/share/local-mail/?

It is only stored in the original location you migrated it from.

Before the email appears in ~/.local/share/local-mail/ and after kmailcvt has finished.

Thanks.
