I'm unhappily revisiting this problem...
I've just upgraded to kontact-4.10.3 and kmail hangs virtually every time while attempting to display emails...I realize there was a change from sqlite to mysql, but mine automatically made the change (I think)
but the behavior is quite strange, for instance, I just opened kontact again, it downloaded a new message and displayed it...I then deleted the message, it displayed the next message quite nicely...so I tried to display an older message with no luck... I'll say that I did see it did empty my trash bin after letting it sit for about 4 hours... I've rebuilt akonadi and kdepim and various libraries... ...also noticed that after
when reopening kontact, it successfully retrieves messages from server and I can display the very last message retrieved... I can then successfully move a number of these messages to trash, but if I elect to skip over a message, and try to send the subsequent messages to trash...it hangs up...giving me the 'retrieving folder contents...please wait' message in the message window while displaying 'Moving messages to trash' in the lower left corner... after 2-4 hours (the status bar in the lower right corner moving back and forth--I guess showing that 'work' is happening), kmail may or may not be able to delete the message...I often get a status message stating 'Moving messages to trash.' I've created a pastebin of
http://pastebin.com/g69payJG killed kontact, opened it again, deleted some messages, latest xsession error while kontact hangs... http://pastebin.com/HCH5LYaU\ ...does anyone have an idea to this problem and how to fix it? |

It looks like the migration from sqlite to MySQL caused errors. Can you check with a fresh account and pristine configuration (don't just delete your config, create a new one on a new user account)?

thanks einar...
...since I'm not so smart with this sort of thing, could you either walk me through it, or point me in the right direction to do it? thanks, |

...ok, just noticed that under
Settings -> Configure Kontact -> Identities The default was not my identity, but Unnamed...so I changed it and it all worked... ...for a while... after deleting 20 messages or so, it got caught on one and now back to the same old story... |

Using your distribution tools, create a new user login. Log out from your current user, then into this new user. Open KMail in this new environment, and set it up like your normal mail account. See if you still experience the hangs.

...ok...I'll try this...
...do you think downgrading from 4.10.3 to 4.10.2 will help? or is even advisable? since this is the stable version, or do you think this would break more libraries and cause more damage than good? |

You should try first with a new user account, because there are way too many variables involved. In my opinion, I'm not sure the downgrade will fix your issue.

not to muddy the situation, but I've noticed this strange behavior too...
in Kontact -> Settings -> Configure Kontact -> (Mail) Accounts -> Receiving it shows my POP3 account as active, --but also shows mail synchronizing email folder 0% this doesn't ever change, and I cannot delete it...I've deleted a folder, just to see if the next folder would sync, but it will not This seems to be an Akonadi problem, as that is the program that syncs folders, right? |

Let's try this: close down KMail, open a terminal, type "akonadictl restart" then wait till it restarts, then run KMail.

I had run akonadictl stop and akonadictl start, but not akonadictl restart...this gave some interesting output...
then I started kontact, deleted some messages, then quit kontact
then restarted kontact, deleted 1 message and it started hanging...

Are you using any filters for POP?

I don't think so...I just used the send/receive servers provided by my email service

I decided to rebuild KDE, and when it finished, KMail seemed to work...I viewed and deleted 75 emails...but on email #76...it began to hang again...now it hangs every time I open it...here's the latest akonadi message:

I just tried again to log in as another, then access kmail...
the first thing I notice is that there is no kontact in my start menu...only kmail then when I try to import messages to kmail, I 'show hidden folders' and try to access kde.4 and get an error window that says 'folder does not exist or is not accessible' I can access other folders, just not any kde folders (kde, or kde.3) |
