Hi there,
since I sometimes need my mails in occasions where I don't have an internet connection, I activated the disconnected mode at least a year ago but it never worked, the message list is available but I could not open any message. The last days I really try to get it working but with all tricks and tips I found in the net, had no success. I don't know any more to do and can't find further help in the web thus I ask you to help me. I'm currently running Kubuntu 13.04 and KMail 4.10.3. Here is what I did yesterday:
I thought I tested it to work after that, but I'm not quite sure right now. Today, I needed one of the mails while offline and only got a notice that it's not available while in offline mode, thus it did not work. Do you have any idea what I could try or better, do you know how to fix it? And if I have to download it again, maybe you know how to speed that up? That indexing seemed very, very slow! Thanks for help! Regards, Philipp |

I am far from an expert, I have mainly used pop accounts but lately have 1 IMAP up and running reasonably well (it has hickups but nothing I can not deal with).
What I have done is to make sure it is not checking mail on KMail startup as that can toggle the "offline mode" if you happen to be disconnected on Kmail startup. Otherwise I only use "local subscriptions" to folders as I am de facto uncertain what "serverside subscriptions" really MEAN? For me it works with few problems though admittedly pop accounts seem to work way more "rock solid" in Kmail |

For an explanation on this meaning, check out this 2009 mailing list thread.

Thanks Einar - to me that sounds like with dIMAP one should not consider serverside? But only for "online IMAP". As I am offline quite a lot local sounds the logical choice.
I may be reading too much into it but if serverside does not really work with disconnected IMAP why even have the option available in that case?? |

Subscriptions are about what folders you see in your account. For example if you have some archive folders you'll never need again you can unsubscribe these forders in your serverside subscriptions. They won't appear in the folder list then.
If you need different folders in kmail than on your mobile client, you could use the serverside subscriptions for your mobile client settings (and webmailer etc.) but disable it for kmail and use local subscriptions instead. Either way has nothing to do with dIMAP but only defines which folders are used. Regards, Philipp |

Sloppy reading of the link Einar sent - on my part. Reread it and now I get the concept.
Might have to change my settings ![]() |

So I did set serverside subs - but local subs "mirroring" these are created automagically it seems. |

Noticed lately that the strangest thing has happened when using the outlook.com account I have to use for work reasons: sent mails get date 1 january 1601. But it only reflects in outlook mailclient and outlook webapp... if I use KMail or Thunderbird all looks good. I switched off serverside sub and voilá - it works as expected again |

I confirm that this is still an issue (Fedora 18, Kontact 4.10.4): The offline mails are cached, but cannot be opened by selecting them and pressing Enter, or double clicking the mail when the computer is working offline and disconnected.
The synchronisation does work however, because if I press "T" to edit the mail in the inbox it opens. Thus, it is possible to read the mail pressing "T", closing the window, and then "R" to reply to the mail , CTRL+R to mark the mail as read and Delete to delete the mail. However, this process is a little cumbersome and it would have been faster and better if the mail could be opened the normal way. Any ideas? |

I just checked if this behavior occurs in 4.11, and I couldn't reproduce the issue. Perhaps it's fixed in 4.11.

Thanks Gandalf and einar for reply. I'll wait until 4.11 is in the ppas and trust it's fixed there. Until then the workaround is absolutely fine for me.
