Please see reply below for update to this post.

Hi all

i have just upgraded from Kubuntu Precise to Raring. So now running KDE 4.10.3

The issue is that i have backed up my kmail, transports, etc. using backupmail under Precise.
Wanted to restore it using backupmail under Raring.
However when I try to run backupmail using in a terminal in Raring , APT-GET tells me to install kmail first (which is already installed) as backupmail is missing.

So its got me rather confused. Where has it gone?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers, thanks

Andy

Getting mail out of Backupmail?

Sat Jun 08, 2013 11:28 am
Hi all

I have found the problem: KDE no longer uses Backupmail from 4:4.9.80, according to the changelogs.

Have tried the following solutions:

1. Restore from the Kmail raw directory structure but KmailCVT has issues with processing the maildirs so I get only a few emails and mixed results.
2. The Export Mail Data in Kmail is a clone of Backupmail but using it to import just puts another Akonadi instance into Kmail and does nothing else.

Therefore, I have a Backupmail backup, the Kmaildirs and no way yet of getting the old emails in entirety into my new Kmail installation.
So I am a little stuck.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Cheers

Andy

As for 2., the import process was buggy. It was partially fixed in 4.10.4, and a full fix is coming for 4.11.

Thanks Einar.

I actually have now managed to get the mail into Kmail after a lot of tries/effort (you are not kidding about it being buggy).
However, its a little confused (the mail for each folder comes under a New folder).

Also Akonadi (?) is not reading them easily. When i click on a message, nothing shows up in the message pane.
If i ask it to Reply, the dialog comes up "transferring" then I get a long... wait. Too hard for many messages.
Will try to restart Akonadi and see what happens.

Cheers, thanks

Hi Einar

i got all the email into my Kmail. it displays them all as unread under each original folder as a folder called "new", as in the subdirectory name.

However I can only read the very occasional email from all my email that I imported.
When I try to access 99% (?) of the old emails, it displays nothing in the message pane.
When I try to reply to one of these email, KDE says "downloading email..." (or something similar) and goes on holiday until Christmas.

Is there a way to get Kmail to reread/reindex or do something else to these messages. Something in Akonadi?

Cheers, thanks

Andy

BTW Sorry I cannot give the accurate message but my X/KDE config is playing up under my default username so I get nothing from X in KDE (awaiting a reply in the Kubuntu forums...) seems my default X/KDE config from the new install is not ideal... its got "issues" ! So i am posting this from Guest (mutter, mutter).

There is a way indeed, not sure if it works, but worth trying. Ensure you have mails backed up somewhere, just in case.
Open up "akonadiconsole", and click on the "Browser" tab. You will see a folder structure like KMail. Right click on the folder you want to clear and select "Clear Akonadi Cache". This should clear the cache and force a reinsertion of mails the next time you access the folder.

Thanks Einar

I'll have a go, once I can get into my main useraccount again!

Cheers
