I decided to go this way for a time at least because of reported problems on opensuse 12.3. I found mention of this on here along with a request to start another thread on the subject but it wasn't started.
The 1st thing I did was uninstal Kmail and then install KDEPIM3 from the opensuse repository. I was running their 11.4 where only the address book uses the new index set up. I clicked on import and nothing happened. I had exported my address book as vcard and those imported without any problems after launching the address book directly. The desktop files were installed off /opt and the usual directories off home were also installed. To get the mails across I copied the entire mail directory across and all was ok apart from the following. I needed to edit the kmailrc file as it referred to ~/kde4 rather than kde The initial folder view was way out and I thought oh no I have lost the folder view but adjustments showed that they were all there. The adjustments aren't fully retained but I can see the folders and unread counts as it seems to have settled down. I had problems launching Kmail from anywhere other than the desktop files installed off /opt. Eventually found that a simple link worked off the desktop. It gave a rather strange icon and I also had warning of "do you really want to run this etc" Hope that isn't a general thing as I use many none kde apps. Most are Qt'd now. Following a reboot the icon has tidied itself up nicely some how or the other but I still have a problem. There doesn't seem to be any way of adding it to the quick launch area and I have failed to get an entry in the program launch list which would make that aspect easy. So ![]() I am receiving mails with kde3 Kmail without problems but for some reason it's not showing their dates or the dates of the ones I transfered across. Any ideas? My filters are working perfectly and I have also had one folder compacted message. I had further thoughts about email import not working at all so also installed kdepim3-devel and that now works as far as bringing up the utility. I play a notification sound - old rolling thunder wav file that came with a sound card many moons ago. No sound ![]() There doesn't seem to be any additional problems following opensuse upgrade to 4.10.5 -

![]() Once this has been done the other date formats can be selected including fancy. Also the custom date incantations can be bought up with shift F1

The execution warning you are seeing is because the *.desktop file used to start KMail is likely not executable. You can fix this from the file properties dialog, or by running "chmod +x" on the file.
As for not being able to edit the menu - make sure "kmenuedit" is installed - and try running it manually.

I suspect the sound notification problem may be that it's a wav file. Anyone any ideas on that aspect.
I take it that sound notifications go directly to gstreamer maybe a file conversion to some other sound format might help? Looking in file associations there is an x-content section but not sure if this is appropriate? - the section labelled software for instance has no entries. The menu edit problem was solved by deleting the entries and re entering them. Curious thing is that the file that keeps this info was updating.

The x-content/* file associations are not related to this problem from what I can tell. They are used to refer to non-file generic devices.
Sound notifications are played via Phonon - which will use whatever backend it is configured to. It is usually GStreamer or VLC, depending on your system. Either should be able to play *.wav files though without a problem. Can you play the file using Dragon Player properly?

The wav file will play through Amorak so I suppose it can't be a format problem.
