KMail-yes or no

Mon Oct 28, 2013 1:03 pm
I have KDE 4.11.2 installed (after long time without KDE) and I am using Claws Mail. I am reading so many posts related to KMail. Is KMail not ready still for normal use, please? Is better to stay with Claws Mail?

Thank you very much.

"Try it" ;)

I personally have been using KMail for a few months now, and didn't have any major problems. Akonadi likes to eat some CPU from time to time (but since it sets itself to priority 19, you probably won't notice unless you look at the task list). Other than that, it works fine.

Greetings,
Sven

I'm not a kmail developer and I don't have those issues so I unfortunately can't help. I suggest you report them as bugs on bugs.kde.org.

I have been trying to install KMail for a few days without success because I cannot connect KAddressBook and KMail in a non-KDE environment (viewtopic.php?f=215&t=118181). So I am a complete KMail beginner. I however read tons of posts about KMail problems. I wonder whether reconstructing your indexes would solve your problem. Make a complete backup of ~/.kde, make a right-click on a bad folder, click on Properties, select the right-hand tab Maintenance, click on the Recreate Index button. See whether your folder is clean after that. Good luck.

On KMail Folders-Properties-Maintainance I havve checked Enable Full Text Indexing but Force reindexing is gray.

Some more information:

In KMail-Appearance-Message Tags it shows:
"The Nepomuk semantic search service is not available. We cannot configure tags. You can enable it in "System Settings"
But in "System Setings" I have "checked"
Enable Nepomuk Semantic Desktop
Desktop search service are active

Enable Nepomuk File Indexer
File indexing service not running. Suspend
Enable mail Indexer
Email indexing service is suspended Suspend

If I click on Suspend than shows Suspend and in front of Suspend is like a "pause button". If I click again od Suspend button in File indexer button doesn't change but on email indexer change to Resume and in front is a little like 'play button".
As I remember from earlier version of KDE I had on the panel Desktop Search icon but now I don't have.
"top" shows me:
....
akonadiserver
mysqld
akonadi_archivemail
akonadi_mailfilter
akonadi_maildispatc
akonadi_pop3_resour
akonadi_nepomuk_fee
akonadi_newmailnoti
...
As I remember on earlier versions there were also virtuoso.
Did I missed something or IO didn't install something?

Thank you.

Open "akonadiconsole" and check the status of "Nepomuk Email Feeder". If it says "Waiting for Nepomuk to start", restart it (you can use "Restart Agent", or "Toggle Offline" then "Toggle Online"). In some KDE PIM version the email indexing does not pick up that Nepomuk is enabled.

Looks like that is something wrong:

Identifier: akonadi_nepomuk_feeder
Type: Akonadi Nepomuk Feeder
Status: Offline, Broken
Status Message: Waiting for the Nepomuk to start
Capabilities: Unique, Autostart
Mimetypes: text/directory

If I restart nothing happened.

Thank you.

Please open a new thread for this problem, as we're going off-topic here. New suggestions will be posted there.

I'd also like to know. I moved to thunderbird a couple of years ago.
If you feel like it, here is my poll
