strange "lag" and cpu usage when previewing some HTML mail

On Kubuntu 14.04 I have noticed that certain HTML mail take several seconds before preview (or open). During the "lag" KMail basically freeze and my laptop fan runs amok. KMail use up to 25% CPU on an i5 second gen with 4 GB RAM

It is difficult to give examples as it is not all HTML but one is basically any mail from cnet.com (I subscribe to several newsletters).

Has anyone else noticed this or is it unique to something in my setup/configuration.

This is KDEPIM 4.13 with the baloo indexing

Kind regards
Sinclair

I've noticed small hiccups when (rarely) viewing HTML mails, but I'm not sure if it's related.

Well, I am aware of many "devs" seeming to think HTML mails should be eradicated but for many others, me included, they form part of a business culture that one has to adhere to.

So if I switch off HTML viewing, yes all is smooth. But that does not help me much as these mail will then show up like this, completely unreadable:
"To view this email as a web page, go to the following address: https://pages.devex.com/index.php/email ... bkDQ%3D%3D

To ensure delivery to your inbox, please add info@devex.com to your address book.

What bothers me is that this started after 4.13 migration.

some more details, after a bit experimenting:
If I switch off HTML "preference" in the security settings part all is smooth even when I then use the "show html by clicking here" function.

Also KMail/Kontact then use about 120 Mb RAM whereas with HTML mail allowed it quickly goes up to around 500 Mb and keeps growing.

So it does not seem to be the viewing itself but something connected to preferring to have HTML mail shown (without loading external preferences).

As noted however, this makes some mail simply saying "go to this webpage" that kind of makes it a bit pointless to have them as mail and completely disturbs my workflow

seems to be bug 331156 in bugs.kde.org
I would not call it "unconfirmed" though ;)

KMail uses WebKit to display HTML mails. What's left is to determine if the bug is in how KMail handles WebKit, or in WebKit itself.

As I wrote in the bug comments, even stranger to me:

remove "html mail" preference and all works well - even if you set a contact/sender (in Kaddressbook) to be allowed html mail format instead of default ... the lag then totally disappears with said user(s) even though the mail is shown in HTML.

further the RAM usage then stays around 115 Mb
