Hi,
My Akonadi is stopped and fails to start. I cannot launch Kmail or other applications using Akonadi. The problems occured after Kubuntu automatic updates. I am using Kubuntu 12.04. The KDE in Precise had a bug that was fixed in later releases and I upgraded to KDE 4.12 by adding the repository kubuntu-ppa/backports. This week there was a (k)ubuntu recommended update that I decided to install. It upgraded to KDE 4.13 which broke my system. When I try to launch the Kmail I get the following error message:
I do not know how to fix the issue. Looks like there is mysql database lost ? D-bus error ?? Any suggestions ? I would like to restore the data I had in Akonadi. Thanks for the advice. Mika Anttila |

I think the main problems are those:
The second problem looks like this bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=331867 A workaround/fix is described in comment#16 there. No idea about the other issue. Looks like Akonadi/mysql is already/still running. Maybe try to kill mysqld (it should be running as your user) before starting akonadi.
Akonadi normally should not store any data in the database (unless it is unable to sync). So if the above doesn't help, you might try to rename the folder containing it. That's ~/.local/share/akonadi/db_misc/. |

Thank you for the help ! The issue is now resolved.
It was indeed this bug. I have the akonadi-server 1.12.1 and I was affected. I am not sure, however, if there was something that I made myself to get the problem. After running the upgrades the Knotes, that was running, asked a permission to update the Akondadi database. It was late in the evening and I did not know why and what the database update was about - so I wanted to postpone such procedure for the next day and pressed someting like not now / skip / .... Then I, I think, I opened the Kmail beofre the database update was performed which may have caused the problem. I did not understand the cause and effect of above until I saw the bug description. Maybe ?, the upgrade script could have avoided the problem if I had updated the Knotes immediately when prompted. If it was such an cruicial step maybe it could have been communicated better / forced. The database update took actually quite a long time. I let my computer to run it while I was away for an hour or so. ( I do not know how long it actually took). But thanks for the help ! I really do appreciate it. / Mika |

If I understand comment#9 correctly, this bug happens when you upgrade your KDE to 4.13 and start the new KMail without restarting Akonadi first (i.e. the old Akonadi is still running). I guess Akonadi restarts itself after running the upgrade script, so this might have indeed avoided the problem (but I'm not sure about that). FYI, I didn't have such a problem. But when I upgraded to KDE 4.13.0/Akonadi 1.12, openSUSE had already added that patch/fix to their packages, so I cannot really tell whether I would have been affected. Regarding the communication: the commit clearly states that distributions should include that patch in their Akonadi 1.12.1 packages. ![]() And AFAIK Ubuntu did ship it as update to 14.04 already. No idea why it is missing from the packages you installed then. Anyway, good to hear that your problem is solved now! ![]() |
