KMail problem with PGP

Sat Nov 01, 2014 3:26 pm
Hello everybody,

I'm originally coming from OSX and only using Linux with KDE for the last 1-2 weeks as my main computer now. And I've run into a few issues with KMail and PGP encryption.
I'm using kleopatra to organise my PGP keys and the keys I have from contacts and friends. And I can read and write encrypted messages from KMail so that's good.

However I have to enter my password every time I want to decrypt a message I get from a friend (the key passphrase) which gets a bit annoying. However I haven't found an option to cache it in the GUI. Is there maybe a setting I'm missing?

Secondly...I've had issues with people sending me attachments and it would either not decrypt the ".jpg.pgp" attachments at all or I had to download every attachment manually. Is there something I can change about that? On OSX with the GPG keychain and the Mail plugin it would decrypt attachments automatically and show pictures or documents in the email body (or allow me to save them somewhere).

I hope you can help me with these issues :) Thanks.

With regards to the first issue, password caching mechanism is not the responsibility of KMail, but of a separate program that "listens" and caches password requests for a certain period of time. Depending on your distribution, you need to look at how to set up "gpg-agent". Most mainstream distros set it up properly by default, though.

For attachments, I've yet to see this issue (but no one sends me encrypted mails, sadly ;) . I will try to test it.

Hey there. Thanks for your reply :)
I'm using Kubuntu 14.04 64bit. I will try to set up the gpg-agent and get back to you here. FYI, do you want me to send you an encrypted email with attachments so you can test the whole thing? :)

Might be a good idea: lbeltrame at the KDE domain (my key is 6E1A4E79). If I can reproduce the issue, would you be able to file a ticket on bugs.kde.org so that developers will look at it?
