Problem: as stated in Subject line. It's the first item on the pop-up menu I get from right-clicking the KNotes icon in the System Tray area.
What I have done: In Synaptic, I reinstalled KNotes, but the problem remains. I have closed all open windows, to see if the note was hidden beneath something that had the 'stay on top' tag set. Looking at the bare Desktop, nothing was seen. I looked into 'Configure KNotes' but see nothing that could control the appearance of a new note on the Desktop. I selected the option to make notes appear on the Taskbar, but nothing appears, when 'New Note' is clicked. While repairing the linked (solved) problem, I was deleting entries in the Akonadi Resources Configuration. Could an erroneous deletion be causing this? ? What are the likely causes for this behavior, and how may it be repaired?

Make sure you have an akonotes resource (if not, create one), and make sure there's one selected as "default collection to save notes to" in KNotes "Collections" settings. If not, KNotes cannot save the note, so "Create new note" won't work. This has been fixed in later versions (4.14) where knotes tells the user about the problem in this case: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335703 If the setting for the default folder does not stick, try to remove the file ~/.kde/share/config/globalnotesettings. |

I think it's the first. I may have accidentally deleted this -- it was my first time working with the Akonadi Resources Configuration screen. Yes, there's one entry on the 'Add' menu, with that name, 'AkoNotes', and it's missing from the list of installed Resources. Selecting AkoNotes brings up a second window, with two tabs: Maildir and Folder Archive. I want to make sure not to do anything that will lock this into my E-mail boxes, once again, given the previous experience. So please let me double-check what I have to select: The default on the first tab: /home/ron/.local/share/local-mail/ and [ ] Open in read-only mode On the second tab: [ ] Folder archive I suspect where I want to be, to make the correct selection, is below a hidden directory, and the 'Select Folder' window does not display hidden directories, or in this case, anything that would be below them. Pressing [CTRL]h does not show anything more. Or, should I be selecting some other folder, that does display in the 'browsing' window? Unfortunately, I didn't record what the correct setting should be, before I mistakenly deleted the Resource. I've just confirmed that if I go ahead and use the default setting, I'm creating Resources named 'local-mail' and KNotes still fails to create new notes. Your advice on the name of the directory I want, and how to get it -- will be appreciated.

![]() I'll leave the previous post in case it's helpful to someone to see what I found confusing. I was expecting to see in the Resource List a heading named 'AkoNotes' -- and when I didn't see it, I assumed it should be there, but I deleted it on the previous day. Apparently I didn't 'mess up' that page with an erroneous deletion, after all. Your second suggestion was where the problem was. I went to the Collections setting inside KNotes, and saw the "Select the folder ... " field was blank. Then I figured out what to do and selected the category I have titied, 'Notes (unfiled)'. Now creating a new note works as it did before -- or, at least, the note is popping up on the screen. If it doesn't save, then I'll open this thread again, if I may. Sorry, but I have no recollection of blanking that field. I should look for some documentation on this, where these details are explained ... and start reading. Thanks for taking the time to walk me through this.

Yes, that's your mail folder now. This is the problem we talked about in the other thread...
Actually you can use any directory you want. This will be used to store the notes. So either use an existing one (if you want to keep already created notes) or create a new folder (the location shouldn't really matter), The default should be ~/.local/share/notes/, your old notes (if you have any) are probably there, or in a subfolder thereof. Right-click on the file list and enable "Show hidden entries" (or similar) to see _all_ folders, even the ones starting with a '.'.
Probably a collection was set that you deleted yesterday. So the default collection was now invalid (causing the field to be blank) and knotes failed to create notes. That's exactly what the bug report was about. Since 4.14, when creating a new note knotes opens a dialog in this case telling the user that an invalid collection is selected, and let's you choose a different one. |
