Hi everyone,
I'd like to try replacing Icedove (Debian's version of Thunderbird) by Kmail, but I'm unable to send and receive email in my university network where I have to use a proxy server to connect to the internet. Icedove works fine when I specify the proxy in its network settings. Other KDE programs such as Akregator can also connect to the internet if I set KDE's network settings to "recognize proxy settings automatically" (the exact words are probably slightly different since my system is in German). I think the reason why Kmail does not work is that it requires a SOCKS proxy. In older versions of KDE there was no way to specify a SOCKS proxy in System Settings and people had to use external programs like proxychains (see this 3-year-old thread: https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=97499&p=206286&hilit=kmail+proxy#p206286 and this entry in the KDE UserBase: https://userbase.kde.org/Kontact#Enabling_SOCKS_support_in_KMail_and_KNode). New versions of KDE do have a field for SOCKS in the proxy settings, but even if I use the option "Set proxy settings manually" and enter the same proxy domain and port that I use in Icedove, I can't get Kmail to send and receive email. Am I missing something? Do I still need to use an additional program such as proxychains? I tried it once a while ago, but couldn't get it to work, probably because I mis-specified something in its configuration file. I'm using Debian Jessie with KDE 4.14.2. If you need other information about my system, please ask. |

is this an imap mail server you're trying to connect to? if so I found an unconfirmed bug report https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=335977
and here's a older report regarding Konversation https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=252500 |

Yes, it is. I have three email accounts, all of them using imap servers. Thanks for pointing me to the bug reports.

you may need to retry proxychains
things KDE'ish you can do: - confirm the bug report - try asking on the kdepim-users mailing list |

Ok, I confirmed the bug report. I think I will keep using Icedove for now and maybe try proxychains again when I have a bit of time.
