I'm running Kmail 4.14.2 and dovecot IMAP server on a FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE system.
Recently Kmail has been unable to display the contents of any messages. The message list window shows all my incoming mail but the message window just displays "Retrieving Folder Contents Please wait . . ." I imagine the problem is related to akonadi because when I run Kmail from a xterm I see lots of error messages like this.
The problem appears to be associated with errors in my config files rather than the software because I can access all my mail if I log in as a different user and run Kmail. I've tried restoring kmail config files in ~/.ked4 using backup files from before the problem arose but this didn't solve the problem. I'd welcome advice on what other files I should attempt to restore. |

Is there any unusual activity when you try to access these mails (CPU, disk)?

No. Running top shows CPU about 99% idle with no CPU usage by kmail or adonadi and iostat shows zero disk activity. Oddly It worked OK for just a few seconds this morning but after reading a few messages it locked up again with "Retrieving Folder Contents". I was running it under truss this time and saw the following output after all the " collection has not resource" messages:
I've no idea if these could be relevant or not. |

I'm running KDE 4.14.3 and experiencing the same issue. kmail works, but if I click on one of the emails of a certain sender, kmail may display in the preview window this email, but however, can't display another one afterwards and I get the described message. I neither can answer those mails, nor forward them.
You can't terminate kmail in such a state, you have to kill it and sometimes remove the zombie. This is really annoying, because the mentioned sender is important to me. Unfortunately I can't publish one of those emails here, but I could forward the email to a developer of kmail, if he or she won't disclose it. How to forward? Using the browser ... |

I was fortunate in that I use IMAP and was still able to access all my email with a different mail client while I was trying to fix the problem. My problem wasn't caused by any particular email. I was able to access all my mail with Kmail if I logged into the system using a different username. Rolling the kmail config files back to a backup from a date before the problem arose didn't fix the problem so I tried rolling back all of .kde4, .local and .config directories but still no success. In desperation I deleted all my accounts in Kmail and then reconfigured them - a bit of a MS Windows type "solution" but it got things working OK. I' m now able to access all my IMAP email and haven't even lost the settings of any flags I'd set on messages but I did have to reset the properties for all folders which didn't have default settings amd go through all my filter rules to reset the destination folders for any "move" rules. |
