Kmail 4.14.2 on Linux Mint KDE 17.2 --
Everything had been working fine for many months, but for the past couple of weeks, Kmail just stops retrieving new mail. The email account is an IMAP account for my own domain, configured with Google's Apps services, so that I am basically using the gmail servers. No new mail arrives, and even when I manually click "Check Mail," no new mail ever shows up. If I reboot my system, then it will check mail and mail will be up to date again, but then it stops soon thereafter. I recently discovered that if I open a terminal window and type
then it will start working again, temporarily, but it seems that the Akonadi service must stop or get stalled fairly quickly, because within a few minutes, I'm back to the same situation of no new mail ever arriving, even if I manually check. The annoyance factor has gotten so significant that I recently installed Thunderbird, which I am reluctantly using, because I rely on being able to receive and reply to emails in a timely manner all day long, but this is NOT a good workaround for me. I very much prefer to be using KMail, as I have been a KMail user for several years now. Any suggestions of anything I could try? |

I've seen this with a lot KMail installs on Kubuntu and Fedora, but never on my own openSUSE system. You may want to restart Akonadi, then check in the terminal for errors when check mail stops working. If you see nothing, you may want to crank up debug output by running "kdebugdialog", unchecking "Disable all debug output" and using the filter bar to check all the akonadi* related items.

Hey, thanks for your reply and the advice!
I followed your instructions, but it doesn't seem to be yielding anything that I could consider useful. The terminal window is constantly filled with akonadi-related items scrolling by faster than I can read them, and this never stops, but it does happen that mail stops arriving soon after I check mail for the first time after restarting the server. As I recall, this or something similar happened to me once before, and I finally just deleted the account from KMail completely and then re-added it as a new account, and everything magically started working again. A side effect, though, is that I lost all my filter settings. I have hundreds of custom filters set up at this point, and I really don't want to have to set them up all over again. I also have an email signature that is formatted just so, and I would have to recreat that as well. I'm pretty frustrated to say the least. |

Another idea just suggested by a developer would be, *before the problem happens*, open "akonadiconsole", go to the Job tracker tab, and enable the job tracker. This will allow you to see whatever task is being done (at the price of a performance drop).
