Latest Kontact regressions...

Mon Aug 24, 2015 6:42 am
Hi!

The latest recommended update of KDE.org, version 15.08, seriously hampered Kontact the PIM suite of KDE.
Sure, it's probably just me and my own fault.

Please help anyone, can't use a lot at the moment.

- Kontact settings are completely messed up, it seems like there are all settings panels of all included applications in one spot, - there are even different items with the same label "general" or "appearance" for example... How can I fix this?
Where can I set the applications I do not wish to show up in Kontact like Akkregator?

- WHat happened to Kjots? It is not in Kontact anymore, how do I get my Notebooks back?

- None of my Tasks show up in korganizer though akonadi states it's using the correct Korganizer files... How to reenable them?
The Akonadi configuration module shows no ressources at all though the akonadi console shows all of them? ???

- Kontact doesn't show any version information anymore, should this not be a part of the help menu? Is this a bug or something messed up on my part?

Anyone?

There looks to be some misconfiguration on your system - test with a fresh user account to see if things are working normally. KJots has been unmaintained for a long time, and given the very low KDE PIM development workforce, it has been removed for the KF5 port (the same happened to KNode).

Well, that leaves me with follow-up questions:

What is there for notetaking now and how can I reclaim all the information from my notes (thats more than 100 notes organized in different notebooks...)?

It also seems that not all applications use akonadi 15.08 and some still need the older akonadi 4.xy version.
Now, how can I clear up the configuration problems you are talking about? I really can not setup a new user again, given how tedious it is to move all email accounts, calendar, personal settings and stuff from one KDE to another... I mean what is the point in choosing the most customizable desktop environment when you have to re-customize every few month?

Where can I find out which misconfigurations are here at work?

thx, piedro

I didn't mean you had to move all your email and so on. I just meant to create a new user account, start the application, and see if things are working normally.

Regarding kjots, your best bet would be to ask on the kdepim-users mailing list: and for your other question, KNotes is the only note-taking application supported at the moment.

thx for your hints!

Checking out everything with a new account will take awhile, I have to adjust many settings before I can use it (some problems with reading small text....)

Sadly, KNotes doesn't cut it all for me, no simple view, no hierarchy, unintuitive integration (where to read these notes? ... pinned to the desktop, really? ... has anyone tested a sucessful workflow with that - I doubt it....) ... it's something completely different. At least I could import all the old notes but it's a lot of work and looses all the intended references...

Obviously calligra suite needs old akonadi 4.xy but all the ported stuff needs 15.08. So there are different akonadi versions needed and working in the background somehow. Also I do not think the new one uses the same database... but how can I be sure? And it is not clear to me whether the akonadi admin tools like the akonadi console or the configuration dialog work with one or the other...

It seems a running gag to mention the complete lack of any documentation...

Thx anyway, piedro

You should NOT coinstall akonadi 4.x and 5.x on the same install: complain to your distribution if these things occur. The two versions of Akonadi have different protocols and you can expect massive breakage if this occurs.

There is "akonadi" 15.08" but "libakonadi-qt4" 1.13 is used by many KDE packages as dependency....

How can I resolve that? Or is libakonadi something else and shouldn't be a problem?
What is there to do? Where can I find information?

thx, p.

How can I find out about the version of the akonadi-configuation dialog?
There is no "about"-menue.... How can I find out the program name?

I tried "akonadi-configuration" but it's not. If I rightclick on the symbol for "Akonadi Configuration" in the apllication start menu I do not get any information about the link or the application...

Question is: WHat is the name of the akonadi configuration program?
Why doesn't it show ANY akonadi ressources and if it doesn't use the akonadi ressources what is in the database at the moment or do I have two?

please help, thx p.

It's called "akonadiconsole". But as I said earlier, first of all consult your distribution to see how this co-installation of Akonadi libs occurred.

I am on ARCH and I do not think there is a duplication (please see see my comments above..)

I am not talking about akonadi console ( in there everything is ok)
but the akonadi configuration dialog (try krunner "akonadi" and you see it there as "akonadi configuration")

In this configuration diaolg all resources are missing. Though I can stop and start the server here I am not sure whether this is the right server

thx, p.

The akonadi control panel was removed in the KF5 version, as far as I can remember. EDIT: But I'm not sure if it's still there or not in 15.08 (it is not in master).

So how do I configure the akonadi server location (it's on a mysql instance in my case) or edit resources now?
Is there a replacement?

thx, p.

Resources can be managed from akonadiconsole (if need be, although it's better to use the corresponding application). Instance parameters are configured in ~/.config/akonadi/*.

Still it doesn't work as expected.

My "local folders" in kmail have also been reset.

This is annoying because I had to manually force the maildir structure in akonadi_maildir_resource_0rc to use ~/.local/share/local-mail" as top level folder for the maildir by setting a parameter like "IsTopLevelFolder" in the configuration file.

Now by the reset of the local folders resource this is gone and I do not remember the exact syntax. Where can I find the settings options for the akonadi resource files? Or do you remember the setting?

thx, piedro

I'm not too familiar with the mail resource, unfortunately. I will try to point interested people at the thread.
