Thunderbird - new mail notification

Fri Nov 27, 2015 2:39 pm
Hi folks,

I really love KDEs new Breeze design. But there is one thing, that bothers me. I'm using Thunderbird, and won't switch to kmail. Kmail shows a count of new mails in the message indicator, but I can't bring Thunderbird to do the same.

I found an old post suggesting a solution: viewtopic.php?f=215&t=121476&p=312422&hilit=thunderbird+akonadi#p312422
In short, you tell akonadi to look into a thunderbird mail dir for new mails. I don't know if this worked in earlier versions of KDE (apparently it worked for OP) but in openSuse Tumbleweed with the actual plasma it's not. Akonadi reports that the given dir ist broken. Does anyone have an idea how to make this work?

Another way would be to let Thunderbird itself show a count of unviewed mail. The famous plugin "firetray" does show, if new mails have arrived, but if Thunderbird is minimized, I can't reactivate it from its icon in the message tray. I like having Thunderbird running in background, and just reopen it when new mails are there.

So there's the big question: How do other KDE users handle this? I can't imagine everyone using kmail. How are Thunderbird users notified about new mails? To be clear: just a short popup via notify is not enough for me.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
