This is a recurrent problem for me.
Every time I set up a new box I have to struggle and waste a lot of time, simply because I don't really understand the structure of Kontact/PIM/kmail. I like to keep all my e-mails locally in maildirs in the ~/Mail directory (yeah, quite old-fashioned...). Now, I'm preparing to do it again, but this time I don't want to lose a lot of time. So, if I want to replicate my kmail structure (configuration, maildir structure, etc) in another installation, where and what are the config files I have to copy to the new install? I detected the following dirs that seem to be relevant: ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail2 ~/.kde/share/apps/kmail-migrator ~/.kde/share/apps/kontact ~/.kde/share/apps/akonadi_migration_agent ~/.kde/share/apps/akonadi_nepomuk_feeder ~/.kde/share/apps/emailidentities ~/.kde/share/apps/kaddressbook Anything else? Or is there now a standardized procedure on how to do this? In the past I've tried to use the automatic migration tool (see post viewtopic.php?f=215&t=98929) but still had problems. Is it working better now? Any tip appreciated. |

There are configuration files also in ~/.config (named *akonadi*), which are related to lower-level settings like mail accounts etc. but I'm not sure how much machine-specific they are.
There's some export configuration tool in recent KMail versions, but not sure about the one you're using.

Indeed, in Tools -> Export Kmail data... it is promised a full backup of my settings and local mail to a compressed file. Do you know if the maildir structure is also preserved? Looking at the pimsettingexporter handbook, I should simply select File -> Restore Data... to restore my backup in the new installation. I guess that I should then run pimsettingexporter in new installation instead of the Account or Import wizards, right? |

That is correct. Older versions had some bugs, though (fixed in more recent ones), so you may want to do a test drive first.

Ok, as a trial, I did a backup of my kmail data using PIM Settings Exporter.
Then I created a fake user, logged into it, ran PIM Setting Exporter, selected File -> Restore Data..., and it created the maildir in the new user's area. Apparently, everything worked, but at the end some dialog windows popped up, such as: Select folder for "" What are those? |

Can you make a screenshot and post it on any image-sharing website and post the link here?

Ok. I included some printscreens in Google drive. I hope you can access them via the urls: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6mdjD ... sp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6mdjD ... sp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6mdjD ... sp=sharing The first one is the one I was referring to. |

Meanwhile, I chatted with the developer of this feature on IRC, and he told me it's likely a bug, which was fixed in newer versions.

Ok. In this case, I guess I should first upgrade to Fedora 23 in order to get a newer version of KDE... |
