HI!

Haven't found a way to assign a default transport (that is SMTP) to an identity.
What have I missed?

Or - do you manually select needed transport on every send/reply/forward?

No, of course there's no need to select transport on evey send. You just need to set it once:
In Kmail clic Preferences/Configure Kmail; then, in the config window that opens, clic, in the left panel, on Accounts, the second icon, inmediately under Identities -excuse if names aren't the same I'm telling to you, my desktop and apps aren't in english, so I don't know what is written in english localizations; I'm translating from my language on the fly-; then, in the first tab, Reception, or something like that, double clic the SMTP account which transport you want to assing to one of your existing identities, and in the new dialog that opens, in the third tab, Advanced, you will see a Indentity Preferences -or something similar, again- section where you'll be able to select to which identity you want to assign that account for transport.
I'd post a couple of screenshots, but I can't see any button for uploading images, sorry. Anyway I'm sure you will find what I indicate, it's very visible.

Cheers.

Accounts/Receiving + selecting an account to modify dialog has got a control to choose identity only (yes, on Advanced tab). And there isn't a control related to SMTP/transport selection (nor in General, no in any other tab). I guess the difference can be related with account type. I use IMAP one. Probably you are using POP3 having another configuration options. What account type are you using?

Ah, it seems I have found: Identity config dialog, Advanced tab contains "Outgoing Account" selection where I can select needed SMTP account.
