Kontact crashed, will not reopen

I was in the process of forwarding an email when Kontact crashed. It will not reopen. I just get the following screen:

Kontact - The KDE Crash Handler

We are sorry, Kontact closed unexpectedly.


Details:
Executable: kontact PID: 5290 Signal: Segmentation fault (11)

When I click on the Developer Information tab, I see:
The debugger application is missing or could not be launched.
The crash information could not be generated.
You need to first install the debugger application (gdb) the click the Reload button.

If I just try to open Kmail, I get:

Kmail - The KDE Crash Handler

We are sorry, Kmail closed unexpectedly.

Stopping and re-starting Akonadi made no difference. All Akonadi resources are reporting Ready except the Pop-3 mail resource, which isn't started.

Using latest KDE (4.14.10)

This is the first time that I have ever had any problem with KDE/Kontact/Kmail.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm totally lost...

I accidentally resolved the problem, but I have no idea why my actions resolved it.
I moved all of the {numbered} files in /.kde4/kmail2/autosave to another temporary directory, then attempted to start kontact, and it started!

If someone can explain why this worked, I'd appreciate it!

Do you still have those files? If so, it may be worth filing a bug report with one of them attached (but check if they don't include sensitive information first).

Unfortunately, I deleted those files as well as the email that caused the problem.
