Hello, I'm using KDE 5 on 16.04
tl;dr How do I set up Kontact to use a gmail account with OAuth? I've been trying to figure out how to get a gmail account to sync with Kontact (mail, calendar, contacts) using OAuth. I launched "Online Accounts" and entered my gmail and granted it access to basically everything in my account. That *did* use OAuth, but that didn't really do anything. I was expecting it to sync with the Kontact suite and see my email there. I clicked around in Kontact/Kmail for a while trying to find a way to set up an email account with OAuth. Is that even possible? I'd really like to use Kontact, but I don't want to change my gmail account settings to allow Imap or POP. It seems like the only thing adding my Gmail "Online Accounts" did was enable Instant Messaging in the corner. Please give me some guidance on what to do or any other tips! Thanks in advance! |

Hi,
Kontact is not integrated with Online Accounts yet, you have to set up accounts there manually. Contacts and Calendars do support OAuth, when you add a "Google Calendars and Tasks" in KOrganizer (or "Google Contacts" in KAddressBook) you will get the OAuth prompt and Kontact will then manage the OAuth tokens internally. We don't support OAuth with GMail yet, just add a new "IMAP Resource" in KMail and use the normal username + password inputs. If you use 2FA you will need to allow "Unsecure applications" and generate an application-specific password in your Google accounts settings.

Any news on this? This post is 2 years old and that basic functionality is still missing on my system (17.12.3). Kmail is pretty useless without sending email, I have been a long time user but my email is now using 2FA and I cannot work around it.

OAuth/2FA login is now supported for Gmail in the IMAP resource. We don't have support on the SMTP part yet, although the switch to KSMTP in 17.12 makes implementing that much easier than before. There are however some challenges still that we didn't have time to address yet. I created https://phabricator.kde.org/T8478 to describe the problem, discuss it and track the progress.

Hi, I'm happy to report that we now also support OAuth/two factor Gmail authentication with SMTP. The feature will be available in the August release of KDE Applications.
