To get email indexing working I checked the "download messages for offline use" box for all imap accounts.

When I switch kmail to "work offline" kmail does not find any mails.

So I guess, setting the option on an existing folder does not result in akonadi downloading all the message bodies.

How can I initialize akonadi to download the imap messages for offline use on an existing account?

"akonadictl restart" does not show any results.

I think there's a mistake here. "Work Offline" only disables network operations (e.g., laptop without network). After you set "Download all messages for offline use" you need to initiate a mail check of that account (that will download everything - so be patient if you have a big mailbox).
