I am a customer of Vodafone/KabelDeutschland cited in Germany and using the IMAP service.
The server is imap.kabelmail.de.
I am not able to synchronize the inbox.
I tried this for several version of KDEPIM 15.08, 15.12, 16.04 using either opensuse Leap 42.1 or Tumbleweed.
The different test were based on fresh users.

All other clients (Thunderbird, Evolution) work properly.
And the pop3 version using pop3.kabelmail.de for the same email account also works.
And IMAP for other accounts (used for business) also work properly.

I run out of ideas what to test next.
Is this problem known to other users of kabelmail.de?

I like to add more details.

The error message points to a crash of akonadi_imap_resource.
I observe that the folders are shown but I can see no e-mails.

I tried several things (within the last months based on 15.08, 15.12 and 16.04)
indicated in this forum, e.g. deleting folders like ./local/share/akonadi etc.

Unfortunately, no success.

First of all, restart the PIM subsystem in a konsole ("akonadictl restart"). Then, try synchronizing the mail in KMail. Note if there is any strange error output in the konsole, and paste it via a pastebin service (since it's verbose).

Thank you for the instructions.

I have done as indicated above.

akonadi_imap-resource crashes as soon as I tried to synchronise.

Do you get the crash report dialog when this occurs? If so, can you try generate debug information and pastebin them here?

I also installed all sources for debugging with gdb.

Here is the output.

http://pastebin.com/BzkVVsjM

The debugger stops at line 84 in file
syscall-template.S
which is located in
/usr/src/debug/glibc-2.23/sysdeps/unix
in case of current openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Here is the corresponding backtrace

That's already useful, thanks. As far as I can understand, the crash occurs while KMail tries to execute expunge actions for your account.

I talked to one of the developers: please file a bug on bugs.kde.org as he has additional questions he'll ask once you file there.

Please post the URL of the bug here once you have filed it. EDIT: File it under "kdepim-runtime", component "IMAP resource".

The corresponding bug has been reported for the product 'Akonadi' and the component 'IMAP resource',

As you may have noticed, this bug has been fixed in the stable PIM source branch. You may want to ask you distribution to ship the latest stable release of Applications 16.04, or to apply this patch to their packages:

I have installed the recent KDE 16.04.3 using openSUSE Tumbleweed.
I can confirm that the bug (crash of akonadi_imap_resource) does no longer exist.
Thank you for your effort in fixing this bug.

Unfortunately, the next bug shows up.
I am not able to fetch mails form the server using recent KDE 16.04.3 with a fresh user and a fresh akonadi with only one imap inbox.

'akonadictl restart' shows some information like:
log_imapresource: Detected inconsistency in local cache, we're missing some messages. Server: 223 Local: 0

You can try clearing your cache (note: this will redownload everything from the server). Open "akonadiconsole", hit the "Browser" tab, right click on the folder of the account you want to clear the cache for, and select "Clear Akonadi Cache". Then start a new mail check.

I followed the last hints on current openSUSE Tumbleweed and on openSUSE Leap 42.1 with both KDE 16.04.3 installed.
Furthermore, I used a fresh user.

Unfortunately, KMail does not fetch the mails from the server imap.kabelmail.de.

For me, this behavior should be negotiated and solved between KDEPIM developers and Vodafone/KabelDeutschland.
Ideally, a test account should be supplied by Vodafone/KabelDeutschland and developers from both sides should investigate the problem.

For me as an ordinary user, it is nearly impossible to contribute because I neither know the details of KDEPIM nor the details of the Vodafone/Kabelmail server software and configuration.

The only thing I could do as a customer of Vodafone/Kabelmail is to increase the pressure on them (by writing letters) to actively support the developing process of KDEPIM for all services offered by Vodafone/Kabelmail.

Einar, what do you suggest?

For me, this behavior should be negotiated and solved between KDEPIM developers and Vodafone/KabelDeutschland.

In an ideal world, probably. Unfortunately, as seen also with other examples of Free Software (Krita, for example) there are lots of companies using it, but none contributing back (or very few).
To solve the issue at hand, you may want to open a new bug report (as this is a separate issue) and I'll see if I can poke some developers to take a look at the problem. Please post the link here once you did.

Thank you for the advice.

A new bug has been reported, see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=366238
