I have a google apps account (So, email on example.com is managed by gmail.),
I have used that account successfully with Thunderbird. But with kmail, I get an error - Please log in via web browser. I did that using Firefox, but no use. It still gives the same error. How do I overcome it?

Did you enable "Insecure access" in your Google account?

That solved the problem. But is that not a security risk? Google specifically advised against allowing 'insecure access'. Is not there a way of getting access like Thunderbird gets?

It need adjustments lower in the stack, which aren't (yet) implemented. BTW, "insecure access" basically allows login with username and password, while if disabled only allows a different login method.
