Can somebody tell me why I can setup a default identity in kmail and what is the use of it?
I have of course a default identity. When I go to some imap folder, in the properties of that folder it says: [x] use default identity greyed out: idendity sender: <other identity> Now when I start a new message, the default identity is not used but the other identity instead! The only thing that makes it work is: [ ] use default identity identity sender: <default identity> But when I mark the 'use default identity' again, the other identity appears greyed out below it. Why? I use kde-apps-16.08.0 (kmail-5.3.0) but with previous versions I had the same problem.

Please check if there is a bug reported for it in bugs.kde.org, otherwise please file a bug highlighting this behavior. Technically the default identity should be used everywhere no other identity is set (but please check you haven't set a different identity in the account configuration rather than the folder properties - this would override the "default").

Maybe you haven't set an autgoing account for the default identity?
Try checking Preferences -> Configure Kmail -> Accounts -> Send -or something like that, my desktop isn't in english- and pay attention to what's the default outgoing/sending account among the ones listed, if it's the other one but the desired one is set you just need to select it and click the button «Set as default» -againt translating to english on the fly, heheh, but must be something similar- at the right. If the desired account isn't listed you'll have to configure it and set as default. |

It should not matter what outgoing server I use. I have a default outgoing server of course and that works. The identity is only put in the header of my email and the outgoing server had nothing to do with my identity. There is also no identity setting in the outgoing server settings of course. I have updated kmail (kde-apps) to 16.08.1 but it still goes wrong.

I did report the bug once, but I did not describe the problem correctly at first. In the folder properties I have 'use default identity' marked and in the kmail settings at the identities settings, i have 1 identity set as the default. In the folder properties another identity is set but that is greyed out, so it should not be used? I was only curious if somebody else has the same problems. I can of course circumvent the problem by setting the right identity in every folder, but that makes the 'default identity' something ridiculous.

You can set that per-account, does that have the same problem as per folder?
