Hi,

it's two weeks now that i can't open everthing that's related to akonadi. Everytime i try to open something like kmail I get
The akonadi personal information management system is not operational.
The first time it happend was directly after accessing kmail via contact which I just installed and used for the first time.
Accessing kmail via the command line gives me the following:

Are you using a custom MySQL configuration? I see

Code: Select all
log_akonadiserver: stderr: "mysqld: Error on realpath() on '/var/lib/mysql-files'

that shouldn't happen, the mysqld process should only use your own home dir and path under $HOME/.local/share/akonadi.

What distribution are you using?

Any ideas why akonadictl doesn't work on a virtual machine or as root but works under a user?

akonadictl shouldn't be run as root. As a regular user, it runs its own instance of the database, that is why it's working. As root, it probably clashes with the system mariadb/postgresql server, if there is any running.

I found an error message that '/var/lib/mysql-files' was missing. I created the file, started Akonadi and Kmail worked again.

Glad that you resolved the issue.

Confirmed in Linux Mint 17 with KDE 4.14.2 and MySQL 5.5.53

Creating directory /var/lib/mysql-files with root permissions did the trick.

Thanks!

I'm having the same issue. I'm "new" to Linux, but a quick learner... just having trouble finding a fix. Running Debian "jessie" with encrypted LVM partitions for home, tmp, var, and usr (and swap)... Install went smoothly, no hiccups. Just trying to get all my apps, etc. to run smoothly.

The only error I've come across so far is with KMail, although after almost removing Akonadi (in order to reinstall it... yes I know there's an option for that) I noticed that eeeeeeeeverything seems to depend on it... so I didn't go through with it, afraid I might brick my laptop by accident.
The error message is as follows:

Create the directory /var/lib/mysql-files/, as already written in the post before yours.

You're welcome.

You should probably report the problem to your distribution though, as this seems to be a packaging error in mysql/mariadb.
(this also applies to the other people that had this problem...)

I just ran into this same issue, and solved it by creating the
Code: Select all
/var/lib/mysql-files/
directory as well. In my case this happened on a fresh installation of Kubuntu 16.10.

Hi there,

I'm also running kubuntu 16.10 (fresh install).

I create the missing directory as advised:
fred@laptop:~$ sudo mkdir /var/lib/mysql-files
fred@laptop:~$ ls -alh /var/lib/mysql-files
insgesamt 8,0K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K Mär 29 12:45 .
drwxr-xr-x 67 root root 4,0K Mär 29 12:45 ..
fred@laptop:~$

but I'm still getting some errors:
fred@laptop:~$ sudo akonadictl start

done.

Code: Select all
fred@laptop:~$ sudo akonadictl start

You are trying to run akonadi as root.
That won't work.
Start it as user, i.e. *without* sudo.
