akonadi causes screen glitches

Sun Oct 16, 2016 7:21 pm
Hi,

I'm using Archlinux, which runs akonadi 16.08.2 and Kontact 5.3.0. I did a general update two days ago, and since then I have screen problems (in KDE5/Qt environment): window borders are blinking; when I open menus, they suddenly close after a short time, and so on; the terminal cursor (Konsole) also is randomly blinking.

After some research (I tried to delete configuration files and so on...) it finally seems that the problem comes from akonadi. If I start akonadi (akonadictl start) and I give the password for the GPG key, the screen problems start. When I stop akonadi (akonadictl stop), the problems stop. Exploring further, I found out that there is a problem with the files stored in ~/.config. If I delete all of them, the problem disappears. But I'd like to solve the problem without losing all the configuration datas.

With this problem, the system is quite unusable in conjunction with akonadi. I can't open any menu for more than a half second, which is the main problem. Note that the problems not only happen on KDE/Qt applications, but also GTK (I can't decently open the Firefox bookmarks menu).

Additional info:
- OS: Archlinux x86_64, plasma5 + KF5
- MB: Asus P8Z77-VLE, with Intel i5-3570, 8GB Corsair RAM

Any hints would be appreciated.

Regards,

RK

Akonadi is not a GUI application. I'm somehow doubting it's causing this, at least directly, Does anything else occur on your system when you start it up? (HIgh disk activity, CPU, etc.). Also it would be good to know what video card are you using.

Thanks for your reply.

I was also quite surprised by the fact that akonadi could eventually cause graphical related problems. That's also why it took a lot of time to find the source of the issue.

Now, to answer to your question, the answer is "no". The problem occur even if I don't touch any window/graphic stuff. I tested a lot.

The test is easy to done. Let's suppose my desktop is on (no graphical applications are launched, excepted the basic plasma/KDE environment), and akonadi/kontact aren't active. I open a terminal. Until there, I haven't any problem.

Now: in the terminal, I launch akonadi ("akonadictl start"). The problems start: window borders are blinking; the cursor in the terminal is blinking; I can't open any menu (including the main KDE menu) for more than some milli-seconds. Now, without doing anything else, in the terminal I write "akonadictl stop". The problems stop automatically. No more blinking, no more menu problems.

Ideas ?

Back on this topic.

I found the problem. Which is that I had a disabled email account (the login/password had been compromised and used for spam, which lead the provider to suspend the account).

Being bloked by the email server, Akonadi was continually asking to the kdewallet for a password. Kontact, or Kdewallet (or pinentry ?) was continually opening a popup which was closing really fast (I think a Kontact message to say that it was impossible to connect). All of this was compromising the system.

Now, the problem is solved. But I have an additional question: while trying to find/solve the problem, I made some manipulations in my akonadi files. The result is that now, for some unknown reason, I have to mail "Local Folders" (one of them being marked as "disconnected").

How can I delete this second local folder ?

You can either delete them from the accounts, or use "akonadiconsole" (beware, it can do pretty dangerous stuff). By local folders, you mean you have 2 instances of local folders?

By two "Local Folders", I mean that in Kmail, in the emailboxes list, I have that:

But about your suggestion: in Kmail configuration screen I have only one "Local Folders" account (which can not be deleted). It looks that one of the "Local Folders" is a sort of ghost.

I tried to use akonadiconsole to see what happens. In the "browser" section, I also have two versions of "Local Folders" (with the same name). In can open one of them, but when I click on the other can, akonadiconsole crashes because of a segfault.

Very interesting. I have had major screen/video problems since doing a fresh install of Kubuntu 16.04.1, KMail vers 5.1.3

Yesterday, the akonadi server was using 25% CPU for a very long time. I did wonder if it was a resources issue, the video problems.

Currently running Kubuntu 22.04, Plasma 5.24.4, Frameworks 5.92.0, Qt 5.15.3, kernel 5.15.0-46-generic (64-bit), GeForce 840M Graphics
