KMail - unable to contact resource

Fri Oct 21, 2016 5:42 am
Kubuntu 16.04.1
KMail version 5.1.3
Using:
KDE Frameworks 5.18.0
Qt 5.5.1 (built against 5.5.1)
The xcb windowing system

KMail has been freezing a lot lately - like sometimes 30 times in the one day, or more frustrating, several times in just 5 minutes. All of a sudden, I'm NOT able to view emails. The message down the bottom is "Unable to fetch item from backend (collection -1): Unable to contact resource.

Also, sometimes I see this message - viewtopic.php?f=215&t=122643&p=336443

The only workaround at present is to exit KMail, drop to Konsole and enter "akonadictl restart".

Is there any permanent fix for this ?

Currently running Kubuntu 22.04, Plasma 5.24.4, Frameworks 5.92.0, Qt 5.15.3, kernel 5.15.0-46-generic (64-bit), GeForce 840M Graphics

You may want to update to the latest Applications version, if available for Kubuntu, and see if it fixes your problem. If not, follow up here.

I'm on the latest stable version of Kubuntu (16.04.1) and the latest available version for KMail (kdepim (4:15.12.3-0ubuntu1) xenial;)

It's happened about 5 times in 5 minutes this morning. Very frustrating. In the days when I used to write code, if an application was in "production" and crashed that much, it usually meant our jobs were in jeopardy. Seems today there is a lot of poorly written code, and testing procedures are not thorough enough.

This is what I see when I use KMail ... Image

The problem is that your version of PIM is not the latest provided by KDE, and therefore it is hard to tell if the issue you are experiencing is present or not. I have unfortunately no way to tell if Kubuntu provides backports of the newer Applications releases.

When I view the version number in KMail it states 5.1.3, yet when I look in the package manager it states "kdepim (4:15.12.3-0ubuntu1) ".

Can you please advise who I should contact in regards to a possible backport, or an avenue to ensure KMail on Kubuntu is kept more up to date with kdepim ?

Yesterday, the akonadi server was using 25% CPU for a very long time. :(

I have been informed by the Ubuntu developers that there will be a backport of KMail in the next few weeks. :)

Please follow up once you update, so we can see whether the issue is solved or not.
