why is the spell checker only working intermittently at best ? sometimes it shows mistakes other times not , more often than not it does not.

nop , neither does the "spelling" button at top (full manual spell checking) pic up the non-underlined miss-spelled words either.

To clarify, you don't have "Automatic spell checking" showing up in the right click menu?

no, right click just show the normal context menu not the dictionary correction when i right click on the miss-spelled words that are not underlined.

no the kmail info window only shows the kmail version but i think i can get what you want from KDE info-centre

framework 5.23.0

However i found other problems with kmail now anyhow so until they update it iv moved back to thunderbird.
