Further to my other thread about Kmail/Akonadi performance issues, there's another one that needs to be addressed if Kmail is going to ever be seriously used.
I am using Local Folders only, not IMAP. Deleting emails is a super pain. Especially when Kmail screws up and downloads previously downloaded messages that are still on the server. Right now, I have over 3,000 of those. Trying to delete them all at once causes akonadi to crash. So, trying to delete in smaller blocks will keep akonadi from crashing, but the time it takes to delete them is astounding. A block of 30 emails selected can take anywhere from 6 minutes to over 10 minutes to delete! |

My God it gets worse.
So after spending an inordinate amount of time trying to delete emails - in blocks of 30... after awhile, akonadi crashed - or the message about not being able to communicate with the back end appeared in kmail. NOt sure if that is a crash or what. close kmail. Run akonadictl restart. Then fsck. Then vacuum. Open kmail. Guess what? All those emails I thought I had been deleting? Yeah... they are all back in the inbox. As a KDE user and a Kmail user for 15 years, AND as someone who has donated cash over the years to both KDE and KMail, I think I have the right to say that what has been created here.... Kmail has now become a monstrous mess and is totally unusable in any kind of production or office environment. I am trying so hard to stick with Kmail - I have emails from 15 years back that I need to keep for a variety of reasons and I've loved Kmail in the past. You know, the whole idea of an email app is to manage email. Even the idea of expecting a "regular user" to know what to do at a command line like 'akonadictl restart, fsck, vacuum' is just... a really strange way of thinking of usability. What are the end goals for Kmail? To be an email app for the "every day people" or just those who are technically inclined? Heck, I admin several LInux servers and know my way around - and can figure things out... there is no way I would ever expect any "regular user" to be able to use Kmail in the state that it has become. Kmail has become, instead of an efficient communication tool, the biggest time waster in my business. Sorry - but that is the way it is and I'd highly recommend the present developers revisit their philosophy and goals here. |

Of course, trying to delete a bunch of them... AGAIN.. caused problems... shut it all down.. restart akonadictl... restart kmail....
If it wasn't so serious, it would be as funny as hell.... here we go again.. downloading emails going back several weeks that were supposed to be deleted from the server! Now I have not only triplicates but four copies of many many emails... and I can't delete them!! Good-bye Kmail. Miss the good old days when you worked really well and I could evangelize for you. Even though there were some bugs.. and some "features" weren't there... you did a good job. Now? Not so much. |
