Kmail Imports Folders and Email Titles Only

I have a fresh install of Debian testing, Kmail version 5.2.3.
I manually set up Kmail instead of importing everything from Thunderbird (45.8.0).
I use pop3 which I prefer over IMAP.
Everything went fine, setting up accounts, receiving and sending email.
I used the Kmail import tool to import the folders and emails. This went ahead without a hitch, the folders, folder structure all imported.
The first problem I encountered was my inability to move any of the folders from the default 'Thunderbird Import' folder. Every time I try I get a small window popping up saying
'Error-Kmail. Unable to retrieve item from source:Invalid item retrieved'
When I look at the emails in the imported folders there are only the email titles, the body of the emails are missing.
If I double click on a title a small window pops up saying 'Please wait while the message is retrieved.' But nothing happens, it just sits there for ages. At the bottom of the Kmail window is yet another cryptic message,
'Unable to fetch item from backend (collection -1): Unable to retrieve item from resource: Invalid item retrieved'
So as far as I can understand these messages the full emails haven't been imported(?)
How do I get them into Kmail? Which if successful I assume will also resolve my inability to move the folders.
The complete emails are all there in Thunderbird by the way.
